20 years of formal training. Primary art is American Kenpo, plus a good dose of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Goju Shorei Weapons (modern). Actively teaching for 15 years.
FWIW, UFC & Pride clearly display the need for grappling skills, however to consider those styles that fair well in cage "quasi-NHB" is misleading as street self-defense styles. If a fighter relies on the guard in a bar fight, someone's buddy will play football with your head. In this day and age of weapons, a better suggestion is a well-deflated ego.
There are a wonderful selection of excellent instructors in the Bay Area. Whatever style you wish to study and you will find an excellent school.
Certain styles compliment certain body types as well. Most importantly, find a good instructor. Visit a LOT of schools before deciding the best fit. There's a good deal of "Bushi Budo" sold out there, so caveat emptor my freinds.
Go in peace.
Lisa: If you're at TAFB, there's several good instructors on base.

i will strongly agree with you on your post.
as i said earleir...
in most cases fights break out when someone acts hardcore chump.....
usually when theres more than one of them.
get a cat in your guard and most likely his boy will jump in.

Dang, not off the top of my head. I met a couple older sergeants who were stationed there last year at a regional training event.
Let me do a little checking to see if I can come up with any names. If, for some reason, you know him, check with a loadmaster named Chris Mevio, he's a reservist but puts in a lot of extra duty there. Sheesh, for all I know he's over in the sandbox now...
Lisa, I'm going to PM you so I can ask a couple other questions about what you want in particular concerning your training.
Regards,
Kevin
