right? I wonder what the statistics are regarding gun related crimes involving people who carry CCW permits...not police of course.

Statistically it is better if everyone knows how to use a firearm and is not scared ****less by the sight of it. You can walk down the street in Moscow with a loaded fully automatic rifle hanging over your shoulder and 90% of people will just walk by you as if you weren't even there (assuming you're not pointing it at them). That's because 20 years ago there was a required high school class where everyone was taught how to maintain, operate, and troubleshoot some sort of firearm, usually the AK-47 and the Makarov pistol which were standard government issue for most agencies.

People who feel uncomfortable around guns usually know little or nothing about them. If you are uncomfortable being at a party with someone who carries a holstered AND UNLOADED pistol then your problem isn't the pistol, it's your choice of friends.

The way the law was explained to me is, the magazine is a part of the gun. Therefore any ammunition loaded into a magazine, even if it isn't inserted in the gun, is considered loaded. If you want to open carry under this law, a semi auto pistol must have an empty mags as well. You can't carry loaded mags separately.

When I was in the army living in Alaska me and my buddy open carried loaded all the time. (Since it's legal up there) no one seemed to give a ****, cause so many people did. As long as you are educated in firearm safety and can handle the resposiblity there's nothing wrong with concealed carry. And just cause you carry, doesn't mean you have the right to go get in shoot outs with armed robbers, or take justice in your own hands. If you take a Concealed carry class they teach you to do everything in your power to not draw your sidearm in a situation. Cause if you fire at someone and the circumstances weren't absolutly %100 right, you can get f*€ked big time, even though you thought you were helping out. There's a lot of responsibility that comes with CCW, it doesn't make you a cowboy..

That's why I love going to AZ when visiting family. I can open carry all I want, and drive 10 minutes away from our house outside of city limit and shoot away in the desert.

Yeah open carry is only a big deal in CA for some reason. I remember there was one time when I was in Nevada where I saw a couple guys riding motorcycles on the I-15 with rifles slung on their backs.

I wonder what would happen if you hopped on your bike and rode down 101 with an SKS slung on you.

A question for the hoplophobes: ever been to Nevada (or Oregon or Washington for that matter)? If so, did you blow a blood vessel freaking out about the fact that it's a concealed carry state?

Yeah, that's right, the guy brushing by you on the Vegas Strip could be packing heat!
If you didn't care about that on your Vegas/Tahoe/Renoe vacation, then why do you care about unloaded open carry in CA?
Or is ignorance bliss?

Conditioning, plain and simple. OC/CCW states are billed as the wild west when in reality they're hundreds of times safer than "happy go lucky, summer of love on repeat" SF.

People always make the mistake that guns are the cause of crime, when in reality, criminals are the cause of crime. And criminals don't like a fair fight.

it doesnt even have to be in those other states.

CCW is still possible in kalif. in fact, that wack job sean penn got one, even though he's had a long record...

that fact is, in kalif, if you are rich and can donate to the local sheriff, or you are a celebrity, or a black man in oakland who had attack from gang member and was threatened... then you can get a CCW...

NOT a new law.

Open carry orgs have been around for a while.

Also to whoever mentioned "...a bunch of people with guns on their hips" please realize stores/supermarkets/theaters don't have to serve you, they have posted clearly, "We reserve the right to refuse service" - I have a friend that is into this in a big way. He has been arrested a couple of times, no charges, even had all of his weapons confiscated twice, returned. The local Mall will probably not be friendly if you open carry there and you will be banned for life, again this happened to my friend at the mall in Hayward and I think also the one in Richmond. You will get hassled by police and interesting enough, I don't think it's changed, there is no "stop and identify" law in CA so you don't have to carry ID or identify yourself unless you are under arrest or accused of a crime. You DO have to show your weapon on demand though to certify that it is unloaded.

http://www.californiaopencarry.org/faq.html <-- This pertains to California in particular

Good Luck.
