any recommendations for check up places on the peninsula or SSF??

I'm looking for an older subaru for a friend, is a legacy from '96 or so with ~ 100K miles for ~$5K a good deal? I've looked at the kbb prices and all, but am wondering what to look for in a 10 year old subaru. any hints, it has to be automatic, and awd... not sure why, but some subaru options on kbb show fwd vs awd.
