Home theater subwoofer recc

I used to have a nice subwoofer until last night when it died. 15 inch down firing speaker and could reach down to 16hz. Now I need a replacement. Dunno what happened. I use it mainly for movies. Can you guys suggest any good replacement? My old unit is a old school Acoustic Research ar600, discontinued. Around 1800 watts peak 500 steady. I'm sad now.

Yeah it looks like hsu research is the way to go. The vtf3 mk4 looks about right. The 15 incher is out of budget :/

PRICE range and approximate room size. To be honest, this is probably the best weekend for you to need a sub...the good ones are all on sale.

The VTF-3 will probably beat your old sub believe it or not, so I'd still call it an upgrade

Here is another one. It is effectively an older version of the VTF-3 that HSU designed for them and goes for a good price on holidays:

Outlaw Audio LFM-1 EX Powered Subwoofer

SVS, another long time and well known ID sub company:

SVS PB-2000 - 500 Watt DSP Controlled, 12" Ported Subwoofer

PSA single 15" (this is probably what I'd go with)

POWER SOUND AUDIO — XS15se Home Audio Powered Subwoofer

I've heard the outlaws are good, but low availability. The PSA looks interesting. Never heard of them. The extension is not as low though. Crappy thing about hsu is that their prices don't include shipping n tax. Came to almost 800$. I miss my old unit already. That sucker shakes walls and couches. Broke wineglasses before!

PSA was started by one of the original founders of SVS. He left when SVS got bought and started PSA. Awesome reviews. I've yet to hear one, but my current dual 15" is starting to show amp issues and the small independent company went out of business last year. If it goes, I will likely pick up a PSA XS30SE to replace it.

Here's the vented version. Should dig deeper than the XS. Go for good 20Hz performance, you won't notice 16Hz much, but it IS fun to have.

My previous sub was tuned to 17.5Hz and I had to filter it at 14Hz

Lolol I looked at the DIY stuff and I have deemed myself unworthy of it. I sheared off my swaybar bolts THRICE bcs I didn't have the patience to use a torque wrench. You can imagine how jacked up my subwoofer would be if I DIY lol

They make it pretty easy. If you can build IKEA furniture you can put together one of these subwoofers. Check out the video:

You get a lot more subwoofer for your money if you assemble it yourself!

Swapping in an amp of different design will yield unpredictable results. You'll get sound, but it might not be the same sound if the old amp had tweaks in it for that particular design. At this point, I'd still say you're better off with a new sub and the benefits of the latest driver, amp and cabinet construction capabilities. PSA uses one of the best drivers on the market right now. SVS has some awesome amps right now and HSU is just always a great thing too. Can't go wrong with those choices.

Yes, WotW first Godzilla not out yet? 16th? I have the 3D version on order. Also Underworld Awakening, Finding Nemo, Scott Pilgrim...

A buddy of mine has a VTF3 MkIII and it was a very good sounding sub. I used to own a VTF2 Mk1. Great subs. Main thing about the VTF is you can switch between more output or more extension to suit your tastes.

ya, it comes out on 9/16. i ordered the 2d version. i don't like 3d effect on plasmas. i have to figure out what to do with the old subwoofer though. the 15 inch speaker and cabinet are in good shape; i think its the power supply in the amp thats dead.

Party at mooshoo's? This thread kinda inspired me to pull the trigger on building an outdoor media system that would sync with what is currently installed.
