The point is, if the sound at the entry point isn’t right, the sound on exit isn’t going to sound right either. No matter what type of outlet you have and no matter how loud you make it.

Fart down a trumpet, fart down a megaphone, ultimately all you’re going to get at the other end is a loud fart. Your **** is not going to magically create Mozart’s horn concerto.

Following early-season complaints from both fans and race promoters alike that the tinny noise being produced by the new V6 turbocharged power units is a substantial downgrade on the old ear-piercing V8s, the FIA has already initiated a study to see what can be done to increase decibel levels.

The first test to try and find a solution was conducted by Mercedes at the Circuit de Catalunya on Wednesday, with their W05 featuring a trumpet-shape object on the end of the car's exhaust during the morning's running in Spain as Nico Rosberg returned to the cockpit.

Reporting from trackside, however, Sky Sports News' Rachel Brookes said that there was "not an audible difference as far as I can tell" compared to how the W05 sounded at last weekend's Barcelona race. Rosberg himself tweeted that the solution "didn't work out" and Mercedes are "pushing for another solution now".

Is the exhaust sound really that terrible? I think it's kinda awesome now that you can hear other parts of the car.

The sound doesn't bother me. If anything might make it more enjoyable in person compared to the V8s.

I'm no expert, but didn't anyone at FIA or FOM saw this coming? Four cylinder revving to 10,000 rpm isn't the sound F1 fans are used to. They should have made it redline at 20k.

You mean V6?

Thing is these cars run on basically alcohol/ethanol/methanol type of fuel. To turbo them, to me, meant MORE power.

FIA knew this based on 80s power levels and to curb that they put the low RPM restriction AND the fuel flow restriction.

I mean, I WANT more power. I want more revs and I want more fuel.

I want lots of aero, and I want refueling.

So yeah, I want the old F1 back... but all that can happen with the new engines. FIA just has to get over this.

It'll happen when "being green" is not important anymore.

If that's the case, got back to a single set of race tires.

Right now they go through a lot of rubber.

Yeah... So much for Lewis Hamilton posting to Instagram himself.

I'm watching him on track right now...

I think Nico is going to beat Hamilton for a change.
