How would bigger diameter wheels give better traction? The width of the wheel and tire and tire type is what's going to give you the traction

Basic physics is the 100% law that the traction and grip are all based on the type of tire that you are using. car body weight, and speed have nothing to do with the maximum amount of traction a tire has.

I hope "type of tire" includes surface area. Over an uneven surface, given the same width, a 16" tire will be able to deform more to provide more surface are coverage to the gound and provide better grip in a straight line.

True, it is all in the tire, to a certain point. When you upgrade to 17's from 16's, the sidewall of the tire is smaller, meaning less rollover, providing crisper response, more stability, and better overall handling.

Well generally when you go up in wheel size, the width of the wheel increases, and this allows you to use a wider tire more comfortably than if you were to use a wider tire on a narrower wheel.
