cliff notes:
Just the Facts:
* In 2012, Subaru will introduce two turbocharged variants of its latest-generation direct-injection four-cylinder boxer engine.
* One of the new versions of the FB engine architecture will be a 300-horsepower STI variant.
* The Subaru BRZ sports car will likely receive the turbo boxer engine, though not at launch.

Great? An entire engine re-design to make the same power, less torque (2.0l), and a whopping 2mpg. It really seems like Subaru is going backwards with this. We got the 2.5l here in the first place because they couldn't make the power/torque they wanted with a 2.0 on our crappy gas. While direct injection will help with this some, the 2.0 will never have the same torque potential of the 2.5. I'm not impressed with this decision personally.

You'll notice that Subaru doesn't have a hybrid in the lineup. They still have to meet government restrictions on mileage fleet wide. The direct injected 2.0 NA motors get much better mileage than the 2.5, even though the give up torque and power to achiveve it. Because those motors will be likely what the turbos are based on, they will be smaller in size once again. It is a business thing and the consumer is the one who gets to suffer.

The new engine was designed to avoid ringland failures. Subaru won't ever admit that though. I wonder how much say Toyota had in engineering the new engine.
It will be interesting how the power is delivered for sure. Seems like 9k redlines will be common practice in the future.

What about all the speculation on a tiny 1.6L turbo boxer engine in their next WRX/STi coming in 2013 to coincide with a WRC variant, a smaller, lighter, 2 dr hatchback with nice widebody sounds tight, but idk about that engine. If you think the torque would be lower in a 2.0L, i could just imagine the lack of it in this one. It would have to be hella supped up for a street version to at least make 300 hp/tq cuz the WRC rally car has alot of race stuff it would never have to achieve that. Seems like Subaru is losing it's touch with every passing year, i'll have to wait & see how everything pans out, i personally can't stand anything they've produced from 08-11 so far. F**k gas mileage & hybrids, i want speed, power, & racing style, the future automotive landscape sucks for enthusiasts like me!
