Um.... I believe your interpretations of the first post are wrong. I believe I am correct in saying they mean this:

New cars purchased after Jan 1st that meet California emissions standards do not have to have their first smog check until 6 years after the original sale. (I.e. just like we have 4 years... so if you went and traded in your WRX for an STi, you'd have 6 years before you must get a smog check).

New cars under the 4-year smog rule do not have to get a smog check if sold within that 4 year period. (I am guessing, this is 6 years for new 6-year-period cars)

[edit]
this means now that you could buy a new car every 5 or so years and never have to get smogged... WHAT A FREAKIN RACKET! Tell me the car companies haven't thought of this :-/

sweeet law... but the cops still have that "go to smog reff deal" coz they are not sure if the vehicle is legal or not.

I say be safe out there and avoid the late night urge to drift on empty warehouse and areas coz they will slap the book on you as I have seen on 8 customers just the past 3 weeks alone.

be smart

This rocks!!! If I'm reading correctly, it looks like there will be a $12 Smog Abatement Fee per year for cars that are 6 model years or newer. That's nothing compared to having it smogged. Yipeee!

Just for clarification, so the new law doesn't apply to any of us within the original 4 year law? Awe, shucks!!!

For transfer of ownership....u have four years for not needing a smog check, for biennial inspections (the smog check you get when its time to get your tags) its 6 years......it doesn't matter when u buy the car...wether it was 2003, 2004 or 2005 for the laws to take effect.

Happy new years u 'all

Your first biennial smog should not be due till six years after u bought the car new, so if you bought the car in Feb 02, your first biennial smog would come due Feb 08.

U should be clear to sell the car without a smog till 4 years after it was first purchased from Subaru...., say from Feb 02 till Feb 06 for example.

Ok so in essence the law covers vehicles purchased as far back as 01 right? As some of the folks reading this take it as it only covers vehicles brought after today.

Correct, it goes back to cover "older" cars as well.
