trying to stay on topic...

Topcover,

The reason why there is such crap in theatres is because "major" America will pay to see crap... Just look what has dominated the box offices lately, I mean, Bringing down the house had two weeks at the top. There have been some great mentions on this board, but if you truly want to see good movies, that make you leave the theatre happy that you spent your money, there are a great handful out right now, including:

City of God (brazilian hoodlum flick)
Better Luck Tomorrow
Bend it like Beckham (fun youth movie)
Bowling for Columbine

These four are available in the Valley, and usually if you check out movies showing at the camera cinemas in San Jose, you can't go wrong. The good movies are out there, just do a little searching, and keep your eyes peeled for the smaller theatres.

Was part of "The Hulk" shot in the City? I wonder if Ang Lee has done for this comic-based movie what he did for the martial arts movie genre ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon")? If "The Hulk" turns out to be any good, I hope a sequel will match him up against his longtime nemesis, The Abomination. Any old-time Marvel readers remember that guy?

We are spoon fed formulaic movies by the studios. Big-budget action movies and thrillers are great, but should not come at the expense smaller, independently made films. But, like you said, we pay to see the blockbusters while the little indies are pushed into 'art house' theaters with little or no advertising dollars. Without word of mouth or a praise from popular movie critics, these movies would probably be shown only on college campuses with a film studies curriculum.

I'm going to see "Bend It Like Beckham" today and will check out "Shanghai Ghetto" next month.

SHANGHAI GHETTO
"In the late 1930s, German Jews were trying to escape **** persecution, but country after country closed its doors to them. The only place in the world that didn't require entrance visas was the city of Shanghai.
Fleeing for their lives, Jewish refugees journeyed to the exotic city, arriving penny-less and unprepared for life in the Far East. This illuminating film features interviews with survivors and historians, rare letters, still photos and footage shot in modern Shanghai where most of the Jewish Ghetto remains unchanged."
Narrated by Martin Landau.
2002 One Hour 35 Minutes Not Rated.

"Shanghai Ghetto" has a connection to the story of a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania during World War II. Sometimes people show outstanding bravery and courage to do the right thing.

1. for me, i want to be entertained when i go to the movies. so that's why i go watch mindless fun at the movies. granted i havent watched BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE cause it's not appealing to me.

2. i hate READING a movie so no foreign flicks.

3. i hate movies that glorify crime.

[soapbox]

funny you list BOWLING. that movie has so many inaccuracies and FICTIONAL events that there is a website that calls for the recall of MM's academy award.

Thanks for reminding me about...

Real World Cancun (what? When did the show get too big for cable?)

American Idol (yes... the movie)

The Hulk (where's Bill Bixby and Lou Feriggno when you need them?)

I'm actually looking forward to seeing Better Luck Tomorrow and Bend it Like Beckham on DVD when they come out. Having to battle the lines and parking issues around the City for movies have caused me to retreat home.

Waiting for movies on DVD is a lot more fun. The toughest part is making it through the first six months of not seeing anything current. We've been doing this for about 4 years now.

Sure I'm six months behind on ALL the movies. But my car is safe from vandals in my garage, the pop corn is 3 minutes fresh with real butter. I have chilled microbrewed beer and soda, a comfy couch, a wood burning stove and don't have to worry about throwing down the right signs when I leave for the bathroom.

We try to make it to the "big" movies that need to be seen on the huge screens like LOTR, Matrix, Lawrence of Arabia.

I'm not totally against the braindead movies (at least some of them are original). Why pay all that money for braindead when you can see the Anna Nicole Show I'm just shocked at all of the recycled crap that is out there.

Bend it Like Beckham is on DVD already...

remember it's a film from the UK, they had last year.

You can get it from most Indian Stores that rent movies... who knows, maybe it's cheap, just but it... it's a great Comedy.

I don't think we HAVE an Indian video place in SF. I suspect, we'll be getting the Region 1 something in the next two months. It just finished up their run in the US theaters a couple of weeks ago, I think.

Hopefully soon. I just went to see it at a Century theater complex today. It's fun and done well.

Next week I hope to see "Identity" starring John Cusack.

Don't forget "Malabu's Most Wanted" ......
hahahahahaha

People were walking out of the theater. It was something to do though hahahahahahaha

Now "Anger Management" was funny! That one is worth seeing 2 times. I think.
