But there are optical cables that are effectively standard, but I know I use the computer to make MDs. Rip a CD, convert to ATRAC3 then D/L to MD. Not sure how the compression works though. CDs are LOUDER in my car at the same volume level as MD at the same volume level but MDs are cleaner sounding. Maybe I'm hearing things???

But by ripping the CD, you're doing a D/A conversion. Then converting it to ATRAC3 is yet another A/D conversion, thus you have 2 levels of frequency loss and noise introduction, so it would not be possible for ATRAC3 to be sonically superior to the CD. By sonically, I mean the actual sine wave forms (which aren't actually even sine when digitized on the CD...but that's a whole nuther book).

Perhaps ATRAC3 adds equalization to the song? I know MP3 and OGG take psychoacoustic effects into their compression techniques...perhaps ATRAC3 does the same and have indeed found a magical equalizer setting.

Aaron,

What is your opinion of iPods?

Thanks,

MD uses a lossy compression file format that is similar to mp3. as with any compression you are trading quality and information for storage useage. basically what an md player does is take whatever you are feeding it, and records it, after it throws out what it thinks to be useless info. this translates into low end, and dynamic range, both which are very important to music. anyone who says you cant hear the differnce is wrong. i work on a daily basis with audio that is recorded digitally at a 192khz sample rate with a bit depth of 24. when that all gets mixed down to 44.1 16bit it is the most depressing thing you will ever hear.

I think they are decent.... I myself own one, and as long as you arent using the stock headphones its fine. I think the sound quality is fine, as long as you put good mp3's in there. remember that its not just the bit rate that makes a good mp3, also the way it was encoded plays a big part in it. i think alot of people have crappy mp3's, listen to then thru crappy computer speakers, and then when they get in headphones they can really hear all the flaws and assume that its the ipod doing it.
