That i'm not too sure about, but if you are saying it's the bitrate at which the mp3 is recorded at 128kb or anyother bitrate, would all mp3's have the similar situation of bad quality? I bought a iriver 128 mb flash mp3 player and the sound was way better than what was heard from the ipod. Keep in mind, i'm only speaking for the older version of ipod, the first ones with the touch sensitivity buttons

i recorded my mp3s to my MD player. so bascially, its been compressed twice and STILL sounded better on the Md players than the ipod. the md player takes the original mp3 and does its Atrac compression on it. so for the mp3 to sound better recorded to MD.. says a LOT about the ipod sound quality.

also, i didnt just compare MD to mp3. the M3L i mentioned that i bought.. is a 20 gb mp3 player. and it sounds WAY WAy WAY better than the ipod.

Dumb Question (seriously not a troll)...

If you record to your MD from CD, how is ATRAC3 > CD Audio.

I mean the Audio has to be converted from CD RAW Audio (i.e. WAV) --> Analog --> ATRAC3. That's 1 D/A and 1 A/D conversion. It'd be amazing if ATRAC3 = CD audio, but how is it better? Equalization?

sound quality-wise there is no way MD > CD. but its hard to hear a difference and you get WAY more benefits with MD (smaller, discs in protective case, re-recordable, better battery life, TINY TINY players, Md players are sexier than any ipod, etc). so overall, i think MD >>>>>> CD also.

I have a 20G one (previous generation), half of it is full of music and the other half is backups of other stuff. The sound quality is fine I think, I was just listening to a CD in my car and thinking it sounded better on my iPod! It depends a lot on how good the mp3 files are. For me, the standard 128kbps ones sound bad on everything.

We REALLY REALLY NEED an acoustics expert to help us figure all of this out for us. My head is littered with conflicting explanations...

Either way...I'm still going for the 40-banger iPod this weekend.

If you record with some direct connect cable from CD player to MD then, no.

But there are optical cables that are effectively standard, but I know I use the computer to make MDs. Rip a CD, convert to ATRAC3 then D/L to MD. Not sure how the compression works though. CDs are LOUDER in my car at the same volume level as MD at the same volume level but MDs are cleaner sounding. Maybe I'm hearing things???

no u can't watch the **** off the ipod. IIRC, the ipod acts the same way as any regular firewire harddrive would.

as a sound professional i can assure u that md is not >cd by any means. MD uses a lossy compression file format that is similar to mp3. as with any compression you are trading quality and information for storage useage. basically what an md player does is take whatever you are feeding it, and records it, after it throws out what it thinks to be useless info. this translates into low end, and dynamic range, both which are very important to music. anyone who says you cant hear the differnce is wrong. i work on a daily basis with audio that is recorded digitally at a 192khz sample rate with a bit depth of 24. when that all gets mixed down to 44.1 16bit it is the most depressing thing you will ever hear.
