How I would handle this.
"Say hey man, sorry I didn't know you were gonna eat the rest of that after you said they were stale, totally my fault and I can see this happening again. But it's our job to clean the place including the break room, so from now on if you or anyone else want want the left over food, put a note but it's your responsibility to go back and clean it up."

I told them:
"Well I saw you take a couple chips from the tin and started walking off, so i asked how were they? If they were good i might have eaten some as well. But by the stale response, that leads me to believe that the chips are not good (worth continuing to eat) and that ill just clean up as normal.
They respond with:
You only asked me how they were, you didnt ask if you should throw them away! That would have been the smart question to ask!
They proceed to say call me stupid and not making sense because i SAW THEM EATING THE CHIPS! So why would I have then thrown them away after seeing them eat the chips.
They then tell me that they have been "snacking" on them even before I had make it to work. They would go in take a few chips, clean, and come back later to eat a few more.
I then tell them:
"Well thats more information than I knew. If I would have known that you had been eating them off and on, I would not have thrown them away. I didnt throw them away to **** you off in anyway, I was just doing the job. Im sorry I did it but can you see things through my point of view?"
They come back with:
"No you're wrong. You should have just asked me if you should throw them away or not, but you didnt. You are in the wrong, you should have been smart enough to ask if i was done with them or not."
So im pissed and get more into defense mode. They are telling me that IM WRONG! I said im sorry for throwing the chips away and that I didnt not intentionaly do it! But I will not admit that im wrong for the actions I took. From my point of view I acted the same way I would any other night.
They tell me that I cant man up and admit to being wrong..... Im like wow....Ill tell you im sorry and that I didnt mean to upset you with it, but I will not admit to being wrong in what I did.
They will hear nothing of my point of view and continued to just get more and more worked up. So basically just got me heated and put a bad end to the night..

I want to get more opinions/votes. I wouldnt mind showing my coworker this. But dont "stack" the results. Be honest, if you think that i was in the wrong, tell me and tell me why.
At that point, they are so tunnel visioned that arguing will do nothing. Personally, I would've agree with them that I was wrong, stupid, poor communicator, etc and would've changed and put them on the spot and ask them how they would to address this so it wouldn't happen again.
Petty people like that are just stuck in the own small and insignificant world. By turning it around you put them on the spot and what ever solution they give you, say OK, we'll go with that and now it on them if it happened again.

I think you did the right thing.
If the whole break room was cleaned except for the chips, I could see their point. But if they're in there snacking on chips that are in there with all the other food getting thrown out and you get a response that says the chips are unfavorable, the room should get cleaned without any issue.
Also, I think En3D has a good way to approach the situation since it's already happened. Don't wait until it happens the next time. Just tell them next shift "Hey, that whole thing last night wasn't worth the fuss." and drop En3D's line. Then there's not a chance for it to happen again and it seems as you're willing to work towards a solution and not just argue the issue at hand (not that you weren't the first time).

It would have been way different if they were sitting there eating the chips too..
meh
this is pathetic...... lol ur coworker has no common sense, and is also pathetic. he sounds pretty brain dead to me. if he didnt want u to throw away the chips, then he should have said something.
"stale" = bad chips = throw away
it was trash, ur job is to clean up, u threw away the trash therefore you are only doing your job. your coworker should stop being a bum.
i have been in cases where the other person gets soo stubborn, that stupidity takes them whole as common sense leaves them. they keep ignoring your statements and keep raging on as they think they are correct. this is not alright, at this point, i would be treating them like an idiot.
you did the right thing, dont stress over it because this is nothing close to what you have to worry about. next time he gets mad, take the chips out and throw it in his face, and be like "eat that then *****"
or maybe not..... entirely up to you.
