not towing is not an option as there are no options in SF to have the engine properly rebuilt.

everyone has made good suggestions, have your friend buck up and get it towed.

That's why I was asking if there was a viable option in S.F.

Since there is not he will likely do that.

That's also why I said thank you.

It strikes me that compared to the cost of an engine rebuild... towing out of SF is nothing

Find a friend who has AAA+ towing insurance. They can have your car towed up to 100 miles for nothing. The person with the insurance just needs to be there to sign the paperwork when they pick up the car for towing. Then you have all kinds of options as to who will rebuild the engine. We are lucky living here in the Bay Area as we have many great Subaru shops. I can't think of anywhere else in the country where there are as many quality shops.

How did the motor blow? If it's an 07 is there any warranty left? Doesn't one of the dealerships have a repair/maintenance facility within SF city limits?

Just asking the obvious - I know there are a million shops around.

Buzzword: Dunno- it's a cracked piston (as I've been told). Over 60K on it so no warranty that I know of. If I remember correctly powertrain is 50K or so? *shrug*

Thank you for the constructive suggestions and thanks to the shop owners who do indeed do good work around the bay area.

As far as towing goes... it's not just towing to a location, it is a time constraint and the ability to get to a location easily. That's why I asked about something in the city... not sure what the issue is with asking if there's a shop in the city...

read posts #3 and #5.

Have him give us a call and we can go over his options and make some suggestions to make the whole thing easier.

Thanks

I wouldn't trust anyone in the city to even change my oil. Novato is only 35 miles north and there are GG Transit buses that run from Novato to the city.

Thank you Ed, I'll pass that along. I'm pretty sure he's got it covered.

Thanks again for the helpful comments.
