If anyone on here uses solid works, I am a programmer for a small sheet metal shop in san jose. We got a job, but they only gave us a sample part and solid works file.
Is there any way I could get someone to dimension this part and print me out some prints? Or even convert the files to dxf so I can dimension it myself?
Any help is greatly appreciated, and there's a 12 pack in it for you.

 

I have solidworks... and a 3d printer. Problem is, I'm a newb at solidworks. I may be able to give you access to solidworks through a terminal server however. Let me know if i can help.

 

Think you could open the solid works file and save it as a dxf? That would be good enough for me...

 

shoot me the file. How do you wanna do it? Maybe throw it in a dropbox and shoot me the link.

 

There is no excuse for the customer to be giving you a solid works file without a drawing or PDF with dimensions on it, it is so easy to just do the drawing when you make the model...

 

my thoughts exactly? seems like an odd relationship you have with the designer artist.

 

It's a new customer for us. We are in the middle of updating all of our computers so we are super limited right now.

I never send dxf files to anyone, always just send solidworks files. Have never had anyone ask if i could send another file format.

 

I guess it kind of depends on how big an outfit you are- and how your suppliers are set up.

Our incoming inspection department needs a drawing they can reference with calipers in hand to verify critical dimensions, so we always issue a 2D pdf drawing along with a solid works drawing and 3D model to our doc control department when we design a new part.

Most of our suppliers work off the solid model, but smaller ones that haven't invested in Solid works, and many times sheet metal shops prefer to see 2D drawings, since the flat pattern is what they need to cut out in the first place.

Ya I can see that, I don't work with large outfits though. Couple of machining outfits, although Im now doing most of my machining myself. A few other laser and bending outfits and thats it. Although..... I am having poly bushings cast right now for motor mounts and he couldlnt read the solid files, so i had to send him a drawing with dimensions. But he did have solidworks, maybe an older version?
