in all seriousness though, I haven't been able to fine a *desktop* unix envrionment quite as well polished as Mac OS X.

dont make me get technical on your assez.

OS X (AKA Darwin ) is the most used Unix based operating system now. There are a lot of great development tools on OS X now, a lot of great apps as well, and the stability, security, and robustness of Unix.

Linux has all that OS X has for the most part, minus the aqua interface. OS X has native MS Office support where as linux has Open Office, KOffice, gnome apps etc and can use WINE to run office, or VMWare to run windows apps.

Since Microsoft dominates the PC world these days, of course more apps will be written for windows, and XP has better themeing capabilitys for the eye candy people.

If you want a secure FREE operating system, use Linux or FreeBSD.
If you have money to burn then buy a Mac with OS X.

Use Mozilla or Firefox. Explorer is outdated, and the most targeted by viruses. You should also run Spybot and an anti-virus

Its just becuase all the fruity designer types base a pc's performance on how its looks. Thus all the good designers went with macs. Now they designed a nice GUI for it.

But its just a skin and can be downloaded and run on linux systems.

Actually designers went with Macs because of the Laserwriter coupled with the Mac GUI in the late 80's, they just never moved off after learning it.

Yes linux is nice, I use it on my webserver, but it falls short in the desktop market mostly due to lack of native professional programs.

I do apologize for hi-jacking this thread. The moral of the story: Use Firefox!

Actually, us fruity designer types like Mac's because we like spending time designing not re-installing our OS. Speaking as someone who does audio, video and graphics at home and tests software on both platforms for a living, I would never by a pc. Macs are expensive, but they're worth it. The lack of viruses is another nice bonus.
