Prisons here in California aren't like the gulags of old..they don't really "rot away" anymore.
If the kid was in general population he'd get recruited by the black caucus & heralded amongst them as a hero for being a cop killer. The guards would hate him, but his bretheren would revere him. Whatever he didnt get from the system (3 hots & a cot, mental health services, health care, free education, free vocational training, freedom to practice a religion), he would get from his brothers (drugs, cell phones, $$, etc).
So death & rotting in perpetual perdition was a fair end for the cop killer. It wont bring the officers back unfortunately, but it keeps the taxpayers from paying tens of thousands of $$ a year keeping the guy alive until he got his place 'in front of the firing squad'.

My thoughts are with you, hang in there... i have had many many deaths in my family and among friends i know how hard it is to deal with death. When people grieve it effects everyone differently and hits everyone at different times.
