My RS makes a whiny noise

Lately, my 2000 RS has been making some odd whiny noise when I accelerate. I noticed this especially in the freeway when I have to accelerate up to speed. The whiny noise sounds as if it's coming from the top of the engine bay. Can anyone help me with this? I'd wanna take it to a shop to get it checked too. My friend said it could be the belts and I had another friend tell me it could be a clogged air filter (which was never changed ever since I bought the car back in late 2002). @_@

Thanks in advanced. I know it's supposed to be in the tech forums, but I was wondering if I could get some local help where I can also get an in person opinion if I hafta.

Another possibility that my friend brought up is that it could be one of the diffs or a syncro. ARGH. Anyone have any ideas or advice? Please? =(

I would first change that air filter if you have been driving many miles.

Pop open the hood and have someone rev it slightly. Try to pin point the noise with your ear, but don't get your head too close to the fan.

My tranny makes noises kinda like that, but only when decelerating.

I sat in the car slowly reving it up to see if I get that sound again while it's parked. It sounded fine. It seems to make that noise at certain speeds (especially when I punch the gas to get to the desired speed).

Try to discern whether the sound changes in pitch related to engine speed or vehicle speed. If it changes with vehicle speed, it's obviously not your driven belts.

Upon further inspection. While I was driving in the freeway, stereo off, complete silence. I noticed the noise was apparent at any speed above 60 mph. It sounded similar to a loud *** tape deck.

Bring it to a mechanic who gives out free estimates and ask him to find the problem. After he tells you what needs to be fixed, say that the price is too high and fix the problem yourself.

Swing by MPJ have them drive the car and see if they can tell what the noise it and maybe they can fix it.

Yea, I'm taking the car to get that coolant recall done(I know, I'm a lagger). I think my car's out of warranty by now. I have about 34k on the car. I'll take it to MPJ to ask them what's wrong with it on Monday or Tuesday. If there is something wrong, I'll likely leave the car with them to fix it anyway since they're just 10 minutes from my house and I personally trust them anyway. Hehe. While I'm there, I might as well get a short shifter and bushings done.
