bah....well that just means you keep a stock turbo on until after you ref. That and the tune are relatively easy to change.

How does that work with smog? All I know with smog is hondas and domestics. I wouldn't mind going that route when my motor goes. Either that or I'm going with the newest long block sti set up I can find.
I wouldn't touch 2.0 now that I've driven both a bugeye w/ a v8 sti longblock, and one w/ a usdm sti block. Unless I was one of those crazy evo guys doing one of those crazy awesome 10k rpm 2.0 setups

My 2.5 seems like it spooled a vf30 better than my 2.0 did its stock turbo. And I now expect it to now spool a green like a 2.0 does a vf30. Add the fact at least the wrx sedan is almost 200lbs lighter than an sti... plus, it'll pass smog just fine. Dunno how much usdm longblocks go for though.

I suppose since so many people in the nissan/honda world get JDM motors and mod them w/ emissions stuff to pass visual, perhaps you can get a cheaper JDM 2.5l longblock for 3k and pass smog with that.

I don't see why it wouldn't. I don't think they'd know that turbo from a stock one. Long as it's clean and tuned to pass smog. Paperwork is solid etc. People do run JDM motors LEGALLY you know.
They'd never notice no wastegate on the exhaust housing, and or the wastegate arm welded to the housing. Never notice the fact that my car has no TGV's. Not just no TGV...no place to put them, one piece manifold.

There are any one of 100 reasons and parts why I would not put my car back to stock to pass SMOG.

makes sense.

I just prefer to know what I'm getting myself into an plan ahead. I don't like the idea of dumping $10k into a motor set up then a couple years later going...ah **** I need to smog it so now I have to pull it all out and put a stock motor in the car then do it all over again. I'd rather build something that will pass and leave it. So just wondering if someone's done it...seems as how there are tons of people running jdm motors.

there really arent all that many people running them. A JDM motor in itself can and will pass smog if equipped with all the stock USDM WRX/STi emissions parts.

Very sweet ride all the way around. I recognize your attentiveness in putting your car together, very balanced etc. That said, was curious why you are getting rid of the Prodrive lip, as it seemed to fit well with the look of your car. Are you goin "STI" v2, v1 lip?
