My "I installed a clutch" thread.

Well I my way home from my vacation week before last I stoped in Hayward @ GST Motorsports to get baselined after I put on my 3" (previously I had bought a used 2.5" I thought was 3").

Well he gets me on the dyno and there we clouds of smoke. I was running pig rich now. I needed a tune. He offered to tune for free. I decided it was time replace my old Ecutek with the new Cobb Acess Port 2 with launch control and flat foot shifting. So Mike (the tuner) converts my maps and marries the AP to my car.

Back on the dyno it's time for some serious toon time, or so I thought. I walk away after the first couple of pulls. It was like watching a pot boil. So I go check out their time attack car in a close by shop getting the new wing. Well I hhear my car get shut off and I come out from under the rolling door to see Mike walking towards me with that "bad news" look.

My heart sunk.

He tells me my clutch is finished and says for me to make it 6 hrs home he had better stop. He tells me he will kick me a clutch at cost but has to ship it Monday (it was Sat.)

So he puts it on the dyno one last time at my request. Shows me it is slipping and it done.

So I am sad, but on my way home at least.

Fast forward a week later. Clutch is here. I source the Subaru man ul for my car (3,048 pages!). I have never changed a clutch before but figured it was time I learn. I enlist my cool *** neighbor Damien and give him as much cash as I could spare to help me out. He agrees willingly not knowing full well what he is getting into (neither did I). So we figure we have all day Sat and we will get it done. Hahaha not so much. This is an AWD car and you have two rookies that have to triple check everything in the manual and then re-check it once more.

Sat, Sun, and part of Monday. Finally the clutch was in. We only broke one thing. I also found a bunch of exhaust leaks and fixed them.

Once we got all the bolts off the tranny and released the the fork we could not pry that tranny off the motor. Stumped and frustrated we came up with this! And it worked right away! hahaha

Damien the man!

Jose and Damien. Jose came to help with putting the tranny back up as it took two guys underneath the car, each with a jack under the tranny and one on top pulling it. WOW.

Cliffs: I has ACT 6 puck unsprung and I is going to the dynos Saturday @ 2pm for more powers!

and drives. Go finger. Don't worry you will learn about changing clutches very soon if you haven't with an EVO. I heard it is 3 times the work on your car. Good luck in advance!

lol..yeah my clutch is prob on its way out. Weak clutch+mucho power=bad news

Props on the install, I don't think I'll even attempt it on my car

I won't be going with a 6-puck either, that much grabbing power would make my TC splode. ACT HDSS for me y0

why no aftermarket flywheel with all that off and the hook up on the clutch?

Props for going at that by yourself. It's quite an undertaking without a lift and experience.

I was told by a few people and with some reading that the stocker resurfaced was the way to go for the setup I am trying to achieve. the last piece of the puzzle is the FP GReen V2 that I need to buy. I will try the turbo install myself after accomplishing this feat.

Thanks for the props, it was quiet the jorb to say the least.

I borrowed a coolant res from a local guy with his car down this week so I can break in the clutch before the dyno Sat. As soon as the res Paul sent me comes I still have to swap it out again, or maybe I will just give him the new one and call it good.

PAUL f'ing rocks!

Also, I tired to get the ACT Street Clutch and thought that was the one that was coming. I guess I misunderstood Devon @ Speed Element as I got the unsprung. It's not the end of the world and from what I remember of the conversation he told me this clutch will hold and work well for the power levels I am going for with the new turbo.

The shifting is not all the bad, first and reverse are taking some getting used to but it will break in I am told.

Turbo install is going to be a lot easier than what you just did. Congrats with all that. Your car seems to be gettin all these nice goodies the past couple months.

What are you trying to accomplish with your car ?

I want about 310 on 91 and about 360whp on 100 oct. I drive a ton in the mountains/canyons so I still need the down low, but take it to the drags so want some top end. Trying to balance a setup that is streetable, still fun and torquey, but actually has some top end to trap. Oh yeah and I still want to fit 3 friends in it and get some groceries form time to time
