I'm having trouble trying to get my '87 Subaru RX smogged. It passed the sniffer test but then failed on EGR Functional and Timing Functional. Unfortunately, the guy didn't really explain what these tests were and how to fix them. I was going to try to replace the EGR valve and hope that solves that problem but I am not sure I can fix the timing issue... If anybody has a smog shop that works with Subarus that could explain what I need to fix that would be great (or if some of the more mechanically inclined on here know what these tests are about, I've search the internet but its a mess of info ).

I think the stock timing specs on that thing is 20 +/-2 BTDC @ 700rpm with test connector plugged in. You'll need to make sure your timing is good. Either your timing was off or he forgot to plug in the connector.
EGR is 2 tests. One is making sure your EGR diaphram functions when you give vacuum to it (give vacuum to an idling car and it *should* stumble or die out is the easiest way to check). The second is to make sure the vacuum comes from the control side (usually done by just revving the car unless yours comes under load). Yours failed one or both of those tests resulting in and EGR functional fail.
To check this stuff you'll need a vacuum gauge and a timing light. Good luck!

In the long run, I'll probably swap in an EJ motor but I need to get this smogged so I can get it all properly registered. I guess I will see Sunday if I can fix both of these things

The investigation fees can vary but Ive never seen a minimum limit. Ive seen many under 10k and many over 50k.

Why wasn’t this tread immediately locked and trashed?!
Remind me again why I should publically incriminate myself and my sources (which I might or might not have) in writing? Especially since I never met you and you didn’t seem to bother participating in the community until you needed something.
I don't mean to the the ***hole here, do what the rest of us do in these cases...get off the couch, take off the aftermarket parts, pass, put everything back on. Instead, your lazy **** went straight to an illegal worst case scenario option over a few simple bolt ons.
