Nikon's D40 is excelent for first time DSLR users. I think the only thing really holding it back is that it's limited to 3 focus points. But for $600 for the body & lens it's a bargain. I just ordered the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens to get the most out of that camera. I'm really happy with my D40, even with the kit lens you can take some great shots.
For my point and shoot I have a Nikon L6, but I'm not happy with it. The picture quality is good but it operates too slow, especially the shutter lag. I'm upgrading to the Powershot SD800 IS (mentioned by Skyline). It's smaller and the demo at the store was much faster. Plus image stabalization is supposed to be a godsend for people who hate lugging around tripods.
There are a ton of good choices out there, just make sure you get a chance to play with the camera before you decide. Some just feel right and others don't.
Good luck!

from the general gist of what i've seen, used, experienced, and heard of....
canon tends to be the choice preference for the small point and shoot camera series.. particularly the SD family.
and for the D-SLR standpoint... nikon d40, etc. makes a great starting point... then it becomes a toss up between nikon and canon for the higher level d-slrs.
but give it a try and see how you like it. good luck!

My next camera will be a Nikon D40 or D40x. I've read/seen good things about it.

that has M mode doesnt it? tell me its not just scene modes!
a guy at wolf camera told me that the D40 is just an oversized point and shoot...and that canon XT has bigger sensor and is more like a real DSLR
