yeah i guess it would be kinda hard to work with a bunch of random short pieces of hair, plus if they need short hair they can just cut the long hair into 3 sections.

unfortunally, locks of love doesn't take dyed hair and I've highlighted my hair for years. I am donating to another organization here in the next couple of months.

It looks like theSTI has a substantial lead over most of us. I am only at 2.5 inches so far, and it has been almost 4 months already. I guess it may take me up to 2 years, but I’m in for the long haul. By the way, here is a link with some tips on helping our hair grow faster: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip214.htm Let's plan on posting pics of our progress in mid- to late-March.

By the way, blacktraxgirl, even if your lock is only 5 inches long, they will still take your donation. They take hair shorter than 10 inches and sell it to offset their operating expenses.

A bit of exciting news that I would like to share is that Capitol Subaru has generously agreed to pledge $10 for every inch of the lock of hair that I donate. The money will go directly to Locks of Love along with my hair. I am still looking for other friends and family to pledge as well.

Hope more of you will decide to join in this worthy cause.
ive tried growing out my hair more times than i can remember startig since hs, but i would always give in and cut it during the awkward stage where you just dont know what to do with it, this is the longest ive ever went and im planning on keeping it for awhile, until its at lease half way down my back. pics will be up soon.

juuuuuusst so you guys know, its 10 inches of hair once it is in a braid. generally that means you're hair is going to need to be about 18 inches, there's a lot left over when its cut.

you can't just cut the hair when its hanging off your head, it has to be put in a not-so-tight braid and then cut off. also, you can not color your hair if you do this, it must be natural hair. no highlights, low-lights, colored hair. just so you guys know

i've been in the salon industry for about 4 years now and i've seen quite a few people do this, great thing to do, but you have to do it right.

Thanks for the tips, but the hair doesn't necessary need to be in a braid. I can be in a pony tail also. That should save some growing time. It's great to have a hair professional chime in. We may need your advice when our hair is getting longer and need some help getting detangled.

Thanks for reviving the thread! I have not had a chance to take a picture of my pathetic ponytail yet, but I will share soon. How is everyone else doing? I probably have another 18 months to go before I am ready to donate.

I failed.... I couldn't take it anymore. It got really long and I went to have it cut. They said that it wouldn't be long enough to donate. I had them cut it anyway.

Even if it's less than 10 inches, you can still send it in. They wouldn't be able to use it to make wigs for the kids, but they can sell it to companies that make wigs for men, which don't need hair more than 10 inches. That way, the organization can make a little bit of money through the sale.

I just got done reading their site and your info is no totally correct. The hair doesnt need to be braided just a pony tail and also it can be colored just not bleached.. here is the site with a video and then also a list of things you can and can't do to the hair.

Good thing i read the site or my friend woudnt have donated her hair.
