Thumbs up Lock of Love Hair Donation Challenge

Do you think you can let your hair grow long enough to donate a 10 inch lock of hair? What if I tell you that it would go towards helping disadvantaged children who have long-term medical hair loss in restoring their self-esteem and confidence? I want to help and want to get more people involved. I came across this idea because I try to help out with charities when I can. However, since I have a very tight personal budget, I can’t donate financially. I thought this would be a good way to give. I have been letting my hair grow since my last haircut in late October last year. I am not sure how long it will take me to grow the 10 inches that are needed in order to donate, but I will stick it out. How many of you are in? Those of us who participate can post monthly pics of our hair to show how the progress is going. I may also try to get people I know to pledge money for every inch of the lock of hair that I will donate. Here is the website of the organization: http://www.locksoflove.org/. Below is a paragraph on the website that describes the organization.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

Been growing out my hair for that very reason since July. Average rate of growth is supposedly 0.5" per month so depending on how long your hair was to start with it could take you 20 months.

Smile

Glad to see there is some interest. From the posts, it looks like we have a few people:

1. Stock Y-gon
2. SpeeDyScooBy
3. KrisND
4. crfsti
5. theSTI
6. ipozestu

It looks like theSTI has a substantial lead over most of us. I am only at 2.5 inches so far, and it has been almost 4 months already. I guess it may take me up to 2 years, but I’m in for the long haul. By the way, here is a link with some tips on helping our hair grow faster: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip214.htm Let's plan on posting pics of our progress in mid- to late-March.

By the way, blacktraxgirl, even if your lock is only 5 inches long, they will still take your donation. They take hair shorter than 10 inches and sell it to offset their operating expenses.

A bit of exciting news that I would like to share is that Capitol Subaru has generously agreed to pledge $10 for every inch of the lock of hair that I donate. The money will go directly to Locks of Love along with my hair. I am still looking for other friends and family to pledge as well.

Hope more of you will decide to join in this worthy cause.

When my grandmother died of cancer just after christmas, I decided I was going to make a donation in her name. I have a lot of hair.

Since most of their prosthetic recipients are little girls, they wanted the wigs to be a certain length. However, that should not discourage you from donating. If you can get your hair into a 3-inch ponytail/braid when you cut it, they will be more than happy to accept your donation. They can sell that hair to offset their operating expenses.
