Another thing, my M5 runs like sh*t on Shell 91 gas as well. I feel some strange surging sometimes when I accelerate if I'm using Shell. As if the ECU is pulling timing. The engine's compression is pretty high (11:1), but doesn't have any issues when I pump 76 or Chevron. It just HATES Shell and Arco.

Complete with citations on the original studies. Granted, these studies were done by the gas companies themselves. I haven't found an indendent report, yet.

Find a Subaru that is Prone to Detonation... Bring it to Rotten Rabies or whatever, then have that same car go to Chevron... Odly you put in the Rotten Rabies, the cars knocks like ****... Bring it to Chevron... Hmm the knocking disapears... But they are the same gas right

I have seen it with a numerous amount of cars that will literally knock everytime they go with the "cheap" gas

You know, it may be due to the fact that he makes this observation from his own experience. You should ask him what kind of car he drives - if he drives a car that does not choosy on octane or what kind of gas goes in it - then he'll most likely say all gas is the same. I couldn't tell the difference with my old car, but I can tell the difference in my STi.

Who is this professor?

On my old buick lesabre I always used 87. One day I decided to put in 91 for the hell of it, and it did seem to run better, I ended up going back to 87 cause I really didnt care about the buick.

My wrx likes 76 and shell, not chevron so much

there was an interesting article on msn about this a while ago... they pointed out something i had no idea about. the article stated that yes, each refinery produces their gas differently, but just because a gas station is branded as a "76" doesn't mean that they are really selling "76". since gas stations are basically franchises like mcdonalds or burger king, they get marketing support from their franchise in exchange for purchasing a minimum percentage of their gas from them. that percentage, according to the article, wasn't very large.

what a joke...my dad was plant manager at the SFO distribution center for Shell, Chevron, and unbranded gas. All gas comes in from Martinez the same way....when it hits the "rack" (where it is pumped into the top of the tanks on the trucks) detergents, and brand specific additives are injected in. The unbranded gas has none of the additives at all.

Moral of the story is...there is a difference....teacher or not...he doesnt know ****.

It's all because of that special they had on tv the other day. I was up in the mountains and saw it on tv and literally started cussing at the tv. I hate that the media will say something as a fact when they really don't know ****. Then idiots believe it and go out and do what they say.

In california all the gas STARTS out the same. But as SSFWRX said...the additives change it. Some for the better some for the worst. If all gas was the same then I wouldn't be paying 15 cents a gallon more for good stuff.

I worked at a chevron for quite a while......they don't make much money on gas. Generally 8 cents a gallon or less.
