Learned that all gas is the same

While in my bus2 130 class today intro to marketing I had learned that all gas is the same, like 76 gas is the same as rotton robbies 91 octain and chevrons. I had challenged him on this question saying that he was not correct but he wouldnt budge. Just thought it was pretty intresting.....My story of the day...

Saying all gas is the same is like saying all red wine is the same. All red wine comes from grapes, but they sure end up different. Ask your professor what he thinks about MTBE and how some gas companies use it, some don't.

Worst professor I"ve ever heard of.

Umm... MTBE has been banned for a while for gasolene in the US. Also, wine doesn't really have additives like gasolene does. If you look at the chemical formula, yes octane and other parts of petrol are the same, it's the additives and "recipie" that make it different.

If the instructor was a former petroleum engineer or oil company executive, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt. Since he made no mention of this, let's assume he's an industry outsider and was smoking teh herb and drinking vino one night and found his information on the intarweb.

Even presumed knowledgable folks issue dumb information sometimes. Years ago, a high school auto shop teacher told my friend's class that it's better to buy the cheapest brake shoes and pads that you can find, since the low cost offsets the difference in price compared with longer lasting parts. That's so daggone dumb because a shop teacher should be stressing brake performance and safety over no-name parts.

Different companies use different additives, but they all come from the same 2-3 refineries in CA. They are formulated differently accross states due to emmission laws. Rotten Robbies can have the same gas as Shell, Chevron or 76. If a trucker fills the tanks at the Shell station across the street but he has gas left, he can turn around and sell it to some independent station, hence the "same" gas.

Don't the proprietary additives make any difference at all, or is it 100% marketing hype?
