Kiva - Loans that change lives
This is a micro-finance company that offers small loans (as little as $25) to people in economically distressed areas. It allows people to start or expand a business, without just giving them a hand-out. It's not charity (people have to pay back the loans), but it gives the boost to people who sometimes just need a tiny amount of capitol to break the cycle of poverty.
I've been using Kiva for about a year, and have never had someone go delinquent.
