Knife sharpening

Anybody sharpen knives out there? I'd like to get a couple EDC's sharpened to a nice edge. I'll look into professional shops as a last resort, but thought I'd give an i-clubber a chance to make some money.

The blades are 8Cr13Mov and Aus8 (or 4).

Someone local to Fremont or Southbay preferred. I may or may not have burred the edge with the bottom of a coffee cup =\

Have you considered ordering a Spyderco Sharpmaker? I think they're about $40 - I have one, and it works pretty well - it's easy to use, and neither of those steels should be particularly difficult to sharpen. It's MUCH better than trying to use the bottom of a coffee mug - trust me.

Yeah the coffee mug was desperation at it's finest moment. I've had a friend sharpen my blade before, but it takes quite some time (from how he used it at least) which I don't have. Also, there are serrations that I think might need special care.

OH! If you don't know about Sur la Table, then surely you don't know how to pronounce the name properly.

In for the response also. I'd prefer not to wait 2-3 weeks to send in my knife to get it sharpened.

The Sharpmaker sharpens serrated blades just fine. I used to have a serrated Dragonfly that I would sharpen without any problems.

Getting a professional job is great and will usually give the best results. However it can be expensive and you are left with out your knife for a couple of days. I have been sharpening my knives for 18 years with just a standard whetstone and then a final pass on an ultra fine diamond stone. Practice practice practice, it is a tricky thing to get down. I will often look down the cutting edge "square" with the sun so I can see any large burrs or nicks in the blade that will need special attention. It is a good skill to pick up as it will be used for the life of you and your blade. Here is a youtube tutorial that looks fairly legit. Keep in mind he is not using any water or oil because he is teaching technique. always use oil or water when using a whetstone.

Start out on some junky knives you don't care about before you screw up a nice knife.

Hope this helps, and oh yea don't cut yoself
