In San Mateo, my favorite is Kisaku. It seems the most "authentic" to me. I kind of hate Japanese food in general, but the gf loves it. I can't stand Korean-owned Japanese restaurants - that's like having an Asian-owned Taqueria or a Hispanic-owned Dim Sum place.

I've always heard good things about Sushi Sams, but every time I walk by that place it seems like it's more for the Americanized super-duper-philly-cheesteak-roll crowd. I hate those rolls.

I haven't tried Yuzu or Hotaru though, maybe I'll give those places a try the next time.

for Ramen, you've gotta try Santa Ramen in San Mateo. imo, #1 ramen in the bay area. Make sure you order their pork broth noodle.
They moved not long ago too. Their new address is:

1944 S El Camino Real
San Mateo, CA 94403

Is this place better than Ryowa in Mt. View? That place is my favorite.

Hmmm this is pretty sweet! Looks like I gots to be checking out Kisaku and Yuzu. My fav sushi place is Ebisu in SF, and I also really like Tsunami but I don't think it's super authentic. I usually hit up one of the places near my house in San Carlos tho - good enough.

In San Mateo...

For Katsu Don on the quick/cheap/good try Kaz in San Mateo. It's takeout only.

Otherwise, Hotaru is my favorite homestyle japanese restaurant. Their Curry Katsu is the best.
