I'd bet that he's looking at a position with Enterprise Rental Car Company.

I looked at the same position - wouldn't even consider me because I lack a college degree. Pretty gay criteria, IMO.

Good luck, man.

And just so you know, that pay comes out to about $35k/yr, which is about normal for a college grad. Of course, a college grad would be making $17/hr or so for 80hrs/pay period.

College degrees just aren't what they used to be worth anymore

okay, that's a valid concern. what are your other options?

if nothing else, maybe you should look into temp work. it's $15/hr and the hours are regular, assuming you line the projects up one after another.

You know there's a problem when you need a degree to work as a rental car salesman.

Your right Dough, degrees just aren't what they were and people without them seem to be doing fine.

eh, i worked at Enterprise for like 2 years. but, i wasn't a management trainee, i was a car prep baby... i got paid 7 bones an hour to wash and abuse high performance cars such as teh chevy cavalier and toyota corolla all day long. did i say abuse, i meant pick up customers in...

honestly, the rental agents have a farily cushy job as long as you don't get stuck at the airport or a car dealership.

what i meant was that getting a college degree is status quo now...you have to go further to be competitive. of course, you don't need an post-grad degree to do well; it's not for everyone.

they kept the cheese the same size, but decided to lengthen the maze...

I do remember them asking how far away I lived from the airport.......but they gave me the impression that the more I worked the more I'd be compensated through bonuses. For some reason I felt that those bonuses were near impossible to reach.

I know the economy isn't at it's greatest but these types of jobs are all that seem to be available now. 5 years ago you didn't need a degree to get them. Soon you'll need a degree to work in construction.

never thought i'd quote my mom on this, but "SBC is hiring for jobs in Oakland" ...IT and Customer Service...and from what I know the pay is alot better than enterprise ($17 to start, i even think this is without a degree, and no experience), you also get 2 reviews a year...just an option if you're interested.

it's not even 5 yrs ago...when i graduated in 2000, i had multiple offers from big firms on the table and actually went back & forth negotiating a pay level that I (!) would accept. at that time, engineering majors were being lured from their college studies to work full time for tech companies. they even went as far as to offer mercedes benz cars as signing bonuses.

times have changed...i feel for the new grads joining the workforce.

Getting a good paying job in the bay area is more about who you know, or specifically what unique skill set do you have. I degree gives you a foot in the door, but no experience. You need to have a viable skill set to get hired, unless you wanna work in the mailroom (and there's nothing wrong with that). Try and get a hookup, ask your mom/dad for help. Get hired, show 'em you can handle larger resposibilities and start some forward momentum.

I agree that pay sucks azz (401K??how are you going to contrbute to that with so little take home!) but nobody says you have to stay forever.

Thanks for the heads up!

Now why don't you need a degree to get a job like this which pays substantially more $?

Anyone?
