If you really want it to happen, and you put in the work, then eventually it will work it's way out for you. Majoring in a specific aspect of business isn't necessarily a bad idea. I personally just don't understand how Business Administration/Management/HR majors can find work without experience or a higher degree. A specific focus in business makes more sense like accounting/finance/marketing. Accounting is the most practical and probably the easiest to find a job in out of those 3.
I think a lot differently than a lot of people, and my opinions are just that: opinions. I just don't like some of the things people get degrees in and business is just the most common example. There are lots of degrees that are near useless without either more school, experience, or connections though.
Psychology, Philosophy, Liberal Studies (what is that anyway lol), History....you can even go as far as to say things like English/Literature. A lot of people view the college experience as just another step towards growing up and figuring out life and what you want to do with it. I view college much too practically for that...maybe it was the part where I had to work 30-40 hours a week to support myself while I was in school. If you're using college in order to better yourself financially, then pick a degree you know has jobs waiting for it. If you just want to make a crapton of money, then right now Nursing is the degree you want. That will change in coming years, but it always does. If you just want to live life and enjoy it? Well, then let me know when you figure it out and how you did it. There is no perfect answer that can be the right choice for everyone, so do what makes you happy. I just know that I worked way too hard to get through school, I didn't enjoy my time there like a lot of people do, and I definately don't want to go back for anymore of that. It would have been nice to learn a few more things about subjects like Sociology, Religeous Studies, or even Political Science...but after you pile on all the other garbage GE courses and Upper Devision Thematic Requirements and pick your 3 units out of category A, B, C....you get the idea, you get fed up with it and just want to be done.
Another thing: don't worry about taking too long to start school. Some of the best students I met were people that just got out of the military or were tired of working a dead end job and they went to college to change things. It boils down to your level of dedication and perserverance. If you want it to happen it will happen. Like your fantasy job of doing your thing in Hawaii. You could have it if you want, but do you really want to be living on some other guy's couch for a few years before you can get your own crappy studio apartment? I could be still working at Best Buy scraping along paying for an apartment and playing World of Warcraft for 12 hours a day, but I wanted an STi instead so I needed the money. No matter what job you end up with it's still going to be so bad they have to pay you to be there.
