job search help
What's up I-Clubbers! This might be a long shot but I was hoping you guys/gals could help me in my search for a career. I feel like I've tried everything (School Career Center, Monster, Career Builder, Hot Jobs, Craigslist, etc.) and I'm still not having any luck. I just graduated with a BS in Business Administration w/ an emphasis in HR Management. I'm working part time right now doing HR work, but the CEO is one hell of a ***** and it's getting really frustrating. If any of you know of any positions that I can apply to, please let me know! Thanks in advance everyone!

Try Graduate school, it helps. I have the same Business Admin. degree, focus in Marketing, and it has been hell finding a decent job. I have chosen to go the way of grad school and get an MBA. Its going to be the only way to get a job doing what I actually want to do.

Ipecac - Yeah, I totally agree with you. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take anymore classes, doh! Grad school is probably the smartest route. Good luck to you in your search as well! Hopefully someone on this board can help...

Probably not, unfortunately. I wanted to major in business while in school also, because I wanted to be a manager...the problem is: What exactly are you going to manage? You can't fully learn to be a leader, but you can learn about business concepts in general. What you do with that degree is anyone's guess. Try going out and picking up a specialty or something.
The business administration degree is just difficult to apply to any specific discipline in the real world job market. You have a general understanding of a lot of different areas, but there aren't very many opportunities for you unless you have connections. Even with an MBA you will be tough pressed to find a job unless it's from a top end school.
At this point in time if I were in your situation I would think about these options:
1. Figure out what exactly it is you want to do. Just wanting to "manage people" isn't going to cut it.
2. Get some experience in a particular field (you might already have some) and try to market yourself there. For example: I have a friend that did a lot of stuff in school clubs for setting up email lists and mailing lists for faculty. He used that to get a job managing accounts at a place called yesmail.
3. Go do something that just requires a generic 4yr degree. A lot of really cool/rewarding jobs out there require a college degree, but don't specify which. Teaching, Military Officer, Police (certain positions), and others.
What I can tell you though, is that you should NOT go back and get some random MBA just because you think it will make you more marketable.
Good points. I always wondered how all these business students were going to get jobs.
"What kind of job are you getting into?"
"Business"
"Er... what type of business?"
"Management"
"Er..."

It just sucks because you feel like you were lied to by respectable people for years. They talk all this talk about how you're gonna go out into the business world and lead companies into their financial futures and all that.
I ended up going into computer science (started in 1999) because I saw money in that field also. I missed the boat on the bubble, but I'm happy I came out with a marketable skill/trade/craft.
I'll just reiterate my main suggestion: stay away from an MBA unless you can get into CAL or Stanford. Very few people get jobs out of other programs: those people had connections or they graduated with some kind of honors...which means they probably could have gone to CAL or Stanford. An MBA just means you spent even more money on school than you had over the last 4 years and that your knowledge base is even more broad. Even if you choose a specialty, like marketing or HR, you still don't have experience managing. Get internships, connections, honors....***** yourself out I guess.
Personally, I'm planning on putting an MBA on top of my Engineering degree in a few years here since I seem to be doing well in those respects. In a way, I think that might make me too specific, but also might be enough to keep me where I am, and keep moving up.
sorry for the double post, but if you wanted some fast cash, I have a proposition for you:
I posted a for sale add in the private classifieds section on this site. It's for my best friend who's going through a divorce and needs to dump off his pristine paid in full perfectly stock 05 STi. He would like to get in the $26k range, but would take $25k. If you find a buyer for the car, we'll give you every dollar you get over $25k, which could be pretty lucrative considering the blue book on the car private party is like $27k.

Yeah, exactly what I see a lot of people doing at my job now. They have tech degrees and now they're going out and getting MBAs to be project managers in the tech field.
jonp do you think majoring in business specifically in marketing is smart, or should i really rethink somethings? i have not started school yet (late start ive been out of highschool for 4 years now)
i really want to be in business and marketing/advertising that is what i wanna make happen, but somethings arent realistic.. like being a surfboard shaper in hawaii haha.

jonp has basically said everything that you should do. If you like HR and want to stay in it or any corporate job pm me. I'm a recruiter for a large staffing ageny and I have so many jobs and no one quailfied to fill them. If you are going to change jobs now is a good time, there is a large candidate shortage so if you have good skills you could have your choice of jobs. Otherwise figure out where you want to be and focus on that, you will get there if you want it.
