But maybe some speculators were around when this happened and by doing this will lead to them feeling like they should do the same. Not in the money giving sense, but by helping others when in need.

Last thanksgiving guy in his 20's came up to me at the gas station and asked for some gas money to get home for dinner. I said no problem gave him 20 bucks and he put every dime in his tank. You could tell he needed some help and well i helped him and he was very thankful. I know what its like so i help when i can.

Yea, sometimes it's a scam, and other times they really need it.. Even if it's a couple bucks.. I used to give give peeps money like that all the time and later find money on the ground wherever I go.. Now that is slowing down, I think I should go back to old habits and give again.. It's 50/50 on a scam or not..

I've learned never to give straight cash. I gave a lady $20 who was in a wheelchair in front of a Bed Bath & Beyond, who was actually crying when she told me that she needed some money for a taxi ride home. Next day, she was rolling up to me in front of a Home Depot, saw me, and rolled away.
Luckily, my gf was with me at the time...

so i was at best buy earlier. right after i got out of my car, this black man about age 45-55 came up to me. he was wearing a hat, and a old jacket. he came up to me really nicely, shook my hand and said: "can you help me? i got rip off, $150 dollars. i live in Sacramento and i can't get home because i don't have money for gas." and he said that he can help me do anything, wash my car or anything like that, and he would get on his knee to promise me that he is telling the truth.
normally i would always walk away from stuff like that. but today i have no idea why at that moment, somehow i felt really bad for him, and pretty much believed his story. maybe is because gas is so expensive now, and what if i stuck in somewhere and i needed money. as i was thinking, i reached in to my pocket and took out my wallet. i only had a few $20 dollar bills, no changes. i was like, damn it i only have $20 =\. alright ill just give it to him. so i did, and he said thank you very very much and god bless you and stuff like that.
afterward, i don't know if i did the right thing. maybe he was lying? but maybe he was telling me the truth.
do you guys think i was stupid to gave that $20 dollar to him? or should i just tell my self that he was telling the truth, and god will bless me in the future for being kind?

wow, looks like theres about 3 people that still believe in the good in people...maybe the rest jump to conclusions because they themselves are possibly just as low as a scam artist?

Hmm, That story sounds familiar to what happened to me. I was walking in the mall, and an old Asian man was crying and saying he lived in Sacramento and really needed money to get home. My sister felt incredibly sad and gave him a $10. Then on our way out of the mall (2-3 hours later) He was still asking people and using the same story. Idk, if its all a lie, they will be punished for that, but from our side, helping is helping and that is key. What you did was right and It is good to know there are still many caring and kind people out there. Think of giving that money to charity, it's only $20, so not that bad.
Good Job and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

thanks for the input guys. i'm really happy about what i did. and i didnt even realized that its on thanksgiving day. let me give this $20 back to the community and the people who helped or going to help me in the future. i feel really good about my self. i dont make much money because im still a college student but like you guys said, he might needed that $20 more than me.
i believe in karma. if he was a liar, one day he will have down fall. good people will get good treatment by god. and happy thanksgiving to all my fellow BAIC members. have a safe weekend.

I think you're a good person for helping. Help is help...whether or not he was honest, your actions had good intentions.

Still don't change the fact that homeboy that started this thread got hustled. I've heard and seen that story a hundred times in the city, it changes slightly with every telling but it's still a hustle... The guy that looks all legit in his freshly pressed Muni uniform (that I saw pulling the same hustle every night for a week straight), the guy jangling his keys around as if one of them is actually his set of carkeys, the guy in the wheelchair pleading his case how he needs busfare home to Sacramento so he can take his HIV medication (and tried the same story on my 3 times in the same month).
If you want to help and you're gonna give, give it to the ones that deserve it. Or donate to a shelter. By giving cash to the ones that are hustling for more booze or drugs you are perpetuating the cycle, not helping them or anyone else.
Happy thanksgiving y'all!

Huck, my comment was directed at no one in general, anyone may interpret as they wish, there is nothing I can do about that.
Everyone has the ability (whether the utilize that ability or not) to have their own beliefs. However, this quote speaks to my beliefs:
It honestly makes me wonder how my store has had our donation jar stolen twice in the past few months, as well as some young kids try to scam us, and I can still believe in the honesty of people
Everyone has the ability (whether the utilize that ability or not) to have their own beliefs. However, this quote speaks to my beliefs:
True generosity isn't so much a matter of giving, but of open heartedness and a willingness to assume the best.
