Hybrid Cars and the Carpool Lane
Plus V8's are more efficient at speed, not in traffic
You haven't heard about the guy that stands on some onramp in berkley or something with a sign that says Pay me $20 to get the work in $20. He just rides along and you drop him off in SF and he does the same thing back, makes like a couple hundred a day or something. Saw it on a blog a while back.

That makes no sense IMO. If you were to give the gas guzzlers the HOV lane sticker, it would prompt more people to buy gas guzzlers for the added benefit of not having to sit through traffic. In effect, it makes everything worse for the environment and for congestion because now you have these huge-*** soccermobiles all over the place, making it all worse.
The reasoning for hybrids in the lane is pretty simple actually. The carpool lane was designed to encourage people to carpool to work and reduce overall emissions by cutting commute from 4 cars to 1. This, of course, is doesn't work in practice because no one likes to car pool. But, since it was designed to help save the environment, it makes sense to allow hybrid vehicles with only a single driver. On the other hand, carpool lanes were designed also to reduce congestion which obviously the single-driver-in-a-hybrid solution doesn't address at all.
I don't think its a great solution, but it is what it is, and sort of makes sense as it stands. But, as with all things political, it gets twisted and becomes a game to see who can cheat the system the best, without breaking any rules.

I guess there have been numerous studies, though, that say adding lanes doesn't help too much. The issue with traffic isn't width and more lanes but flow. When a lane is added, it only temporarily reduces traffic congestion and is back to being just as busy within four years or less. The only solution with traffic is to simply live closer to work (or work closer to home) and that's not that great of a solution.
Nope, but I lived there for 5 years.
I moved to a place that has very little commuting traffic, save for one interchange, which I avoid crossing unless absolutely necessary. I live in Reno.

since hybrids are in the carpool lane and not carpoolin, what an oxymoron...I say the only pass that they should have is to be able to use the carpool lane to get onto the freeway and that's it.
If you haven't realized what the government is doing and pushing hybrids then I would say look into it before you buy one. Like anything dealing with the government, there's always an M.O. about it.
But I really don't mind much about the hybrids not carpooling. It's the nonhybrid driving singles in there aka driving dirty. That pisses me off along with all the asshats that tailgate and cut people off. I'm thinking as if driving like that will get you to work faster. Let alone to do it everyday...my gosh :duh:
