So the thing is once a cop pull you over they have to cite you for something.

I would say I was just checking to see if you had a front plate and your exhaust seems a little big. Oh, its stock. Let me call Subaru and verify. Oh, well, make sure you get a bracket up on the front of your car or next time I will give you a ticket. Have a good day and dont fly away with that wing.
Why would the cop have to "prove" himself?

Because that's the way it works. Honestly people can go after them if they are wrong, so they must be right even if they are plainly wrong. They are simply banking on the chance that you won't take it all the way, which most of us simply don't have time for. It's easier to pay the fine, and make it go away. If we fought every one of these, this would stop - but it would be a pain in the *** and most likely it won't happen.

My friend just got busted for a tint ticket on his 2 mile commute thru SF. The cop got out a meter and measured his tint at 36% when it was supposed to be 70% or something and cited him for a traffic infraction of 26708.5a.

Anyone know what the deal is with tint now? I thought you weren't supposed to have any tint on your front side windows but now it's changed or something.

Either way, shouldn't it be a fix-it ticket instead of something that makes your insurance go up??? WTF?

The streets are safer indeed... I wish there were some way the cops could be forced to serve and protect rather than harrass for profit. And they wonder why they have a bad reputation....

70% visibility of tint + glass. not just tint alone.

right... no tints in front of the driver. for a 2 door car, the door windows must not have tints or less than the allowable value.

anything behind the driver, you can black out everything if you want.

remember, the cops pushed this tint law for their SAFETY. they wont wanna walk up to a stopped vehicle and be surprised with a weapon or WORSE!

that i can agree with.

i always recommend if you are stopped, to roll down ALL your tinted windows so the cop can see inside way before they get to the driver...

tint or not, you should roll down the windows so the cop can clearly see the inside of the car. shut the car off throw the keys on top of the dashboard and have both hands on the steering wheel.

this exhaust ticket is kinda strange because i've been driving around SF for 5+ years with an axle back. i'm pretty sure my axle back is louder than a stock STi. never got hassled (knock on wood). went through the broadway street tunnel last night going about 70. downshifted to 4th then to 3rd on the exit of the tunnel for the stop light and right in front of me was a cop waiting at the stop light at 1:30AM. sure the cop that wrote you the ticket wasn't a park police?

you're just one of the lucky ones. the cop who spotted you wasn't profiling. lol... that or had other things in his mind to pay attention to you.

This is what I always do, windows down, engine off, keys on the dash, hands on the wheel. "Yes sir, no sir, my registration is in the glovebox, may I get it sir?" They need to feel like they are safe, and in control. It's an 'all expenses paid by you' power trip.

1 out of 5 or so are NOT jerks. They take some serious liberties.

I am pretty worried with the ScoobySport, but I want to have it measured. Anyone know where you can have your db measured and get a print out?

here:

http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

note the following:

ILLEGAL:

Tinting the front side windows and the windshield (except for a narrow band at the top of the windshield). Windows behind the driver's head may be tinted. If rear window is tinted, right-side mirror is required (26708 VC).

now, from the VC:

Sun screening devices meeting the requirements of Section 26708.2
installed on the side windows on either side of the vehicle's front seat,
if the driver or a passenger in the front seat has in his or her
possession a letter or other document signed by a licensed physician and
surgeon certifying that the person must be shaded from the sun due to a
medical condition, or has in his or her possession a letter or other
document signed by a licensed optometrist certifying that the person must
be shaded from the sun due to a visual condition. The devices authorized
by this paragraph shall not be used during darkness.

In other words: IT IS ILLEGAL to have front tint. You can use SUNSHADES if you have a medical condition, a letter from your doctor, and it must not be used for driving during hours of darkness.

California

* Visor..................4"

* Front doors.....70%(clear) (70% NET VISIBILE LIGHT TRANSMISSION)

* Rear doors...........Any

* Back window..............Any

70% net visibile light transmission means that 70% of light must be allowed through any film AND the glass, in total. This means you can't use just about any available tinted film. You're only allowed to use a clear film.

YAY for kicking yourself in the face. I read all these complaints and I feel very sorry for you guys. I have tinted windows and a TBE and don't have a thought in my head about getting pulled over. I can imagine that it is very frustrating to wonder when or where a cop will jump out from his hiding spot and nab you for something so not important like how loud your car is or whether your car is too lowered so your headlights don't meet the minimum height. I truly feel for all of you and I hope that something can be done about this.

I watched a show a couple years ago about the police in California getting trained to identify performance parts and which ones are illegal or not. Maybe you guys should find local shops that would be willing to give classes to officers to help identify what is truly illegal and what is an acceptable aftermarket part. I would hope that some kind of solution with police stations and local shops could be found. I don't know who you would have to talk to but if all of us can tell the difference between aftermarket and stock then they should be able to also.

sure, they carry meters for THAT

I'b be willing to put my downpipe and uppipe back on to bait some cops in the bay area. I have a borla hush, and if its quiet enough for Laguna Seca, its quiet enough for the street (Laguna Seca Limit=91dB, street limit=95dB). I have the STi wing so I'll just get a legal tint and drive around

i've been wanting to buy an old beat 91 civic hatchback... then just "ricing" it the hell out... like cut open a fartcan muffler and weld it over the stock exhaust, and then just be a complete dick to the cops that pulled me over, and have a 100% legal motor too... then just keep going to the smog shops and laughing... Maybe even get an exhaust that is 94db(1db under the limit) LOL!

but then again.. I'm an *******
