How not to clean your bike chain ~NSFW~

Being a mechanic of many sorts, I have had similar happen to me.
Years ago, while wrenching on bicycles for a living, I had a similar instance. I was working on a friends bike, trying to lube an old chain that should have been replaced. He did not have the $ to buy a new one, so I was doing everything to remove stiff links and rust. Another friend walked behind me, bumped me, and my finger sucked up in between the chain and chainring (BMX). I had to continue to pedal the bike to get my finger out. Luckily I just lost the side of the tip of my index finger.
The title of that GSXR thread, and the pics are scary.
I cannot imagine trying what he did. I don't know why spinning the tire by hand was not enough. Boggles my mind

If I was to use a lube, I'd pretty much use a dry lithium lube, or motor oil. O-ring chains are sealed, so they don't need to be lubed.
BTW: I get 30,000+ miles out of my chains using just WD-40, and have seen others get 45,000+ (we're not that easy on our bikes either). The most important part is to clean your chain consistently. I get pretty lazy and end up cleaning my chain from 1000-2000 miles for the most part, I should probably do it every 500 miles or so.

I'll pass on watching, I've seen enough people loose figer tips. WD40 does not go in any of my tool boxes at work or home for a reason, it's not good for anything. For cleaning, penetrating and lubricating I prefer corrosion X.

when I was a tech at Marin Acura, we had another tech Steve that lost his finger down to his first knuckle by trying to sand an AC belt while the motor was running. ran it through the pulley and took it clean off, it was too mangled to sew back on so from them on he looked like that guy in the movie Sniper that got half his triger finger cut off. And boy was he bitter.
Moral of the story, dont stick your fingers in high speed machinery mm'kay??

I'm not lie and bash me if you want but I've had my bike in a chock and rear stand and have cleaned the chain with the bike running. But I use first and just ease off the clutch slowly. Also the important thing is. That I use a 6 inch brush. Its funny how idiots can turn a simple process into something dangerous.
Btw don't go to sbr with that anti wd40 stuff. =]

i am a motorcycle tech and sometimes admit to lubing a chian while bike on stand, locked in wheel vise on lift... oh wait i didnt say CLEAN or WIPE!!! WTF!!!! 1)ROLL WHEEL BY HAND. 2)SPRAY LUBE. 3)RIDE THE THING! ITS GNNA GET DIRTY ANYWAYS, ESPECIALLY IF USING LUBES THAT WILL FLING OFF (not mentioning brands) BESIDES MOST OF THE DIRT AND GRIME COMES FROM THE FREAKING CHAIN GUARD COLLECTING LUBE THAT JUST PILES AND PILES.... sorry i got carried away
i service a s*%t load of bikes and use good judgement! if u dont clean ur own chain... then what makes u think im gnna spend an extra half to an hour (i've seen some F%$KED UP dirty *** wheels) and have to charge u for it??? i'll be a nice guy and wipe off a little and recommend cust clean and lube chain at his expense.
