hey

it isnt really necessary, but changing to synthetic isnt a bad idea.

it is pretty easy also. there is a plug just like your oil drain plug on the botom of the tranny case. unscrew it making sure to wear proper body substanse isolation (gloves) to keep the fluid off your hands. this stuff is pretty bad for you. drain it into a proper container. make sure to get a funnel (one of the long ones). you will see a dip stick on the passenger side of the tranny. put the new tranny fluid in thereusing the fluid (the amount should be in your manual). make sure to not over fill or under fill. check the level a few times soon after you have replaced the fluid to make sure the level didn't decrease to drastically.

take the old oil to a proper recycling station and you are done.

Yes, the best oil that I have run in all of my Subaru transmission (3 in the last year) has been the Subaru factory GL-5. Everything else is just too slick.

I have heard that a 50/50 mix of Redline shockproof heavy and light is good too...but $$$

I think that best bet is to go stock, and them change at 10K intervals...

Just my $.02 from a guy with ALOT of experience with this crap.

I agree with Josh. It's not necessary. I change mine @ 14K, picked up the oil straight from Red Line Oil office at Benecia. I don't remember what vis I used. But I can look it up for you or you can go to their web site. It's a little bit expensive but it's worth it.

I changed my tranny and rear diff oil a couple of weeks ago. It is very easy. Check out the link for pictures. I used Royal Purple Max Gear 75W90 (you'll need 5 quarts - .8 rear diff, 3.8 tranny).

Nice link. I never though of using that pump for the rear diff.

BTW what's the word on Royal Purple?

Does it coat better than the redline stuff?
thanks
