Benbrook man says he may have fired bullet that hit TMS fan

A 49-year-old Benbrook man has told officials he may have fired the large-caliber stray bullet that struck an Arlington woman in the arm at the Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
The man, who is not being identified by the Star-Telegram because he has not been arrested or charged, contacted police Monday after learning from a friend about news reports that a stray .50-caliber bullet had struck Kerry “Jill” King, a 62-year-old woman.
The man told police he had been target shooting about five miles away near a rifle range between 10 and 11 a.m. Sunday and had fired a .50-caliber Vulcan single shot rifle about five or six times.
Detectives have confiscated the man’s rifle and will conduct ballistics tests to determine if the stray bullet came from the weapon. The Benbrook man could face a charge of deadly conduct for recklessly firing a weapon in the direction of others, police said.

He's probably going to get all his guns taken away and will spend some time in a cell, all for "doing the right thing".

I don't understand why he should be charged with anything. The bullet was fired at a rifle range.
It's not like the dude shot it up in the air in the middle of Dallas.

"doing the right thing" would have been to secure his weapon and not indiscriminately fire something that can shred a car at something other than a target that was in direct site and able to ablate the round.

I think the range owner should get pwn3d for not having backstops that can stop .50bmg.
I don't understand how he shot so high... Its not something you can do accidently... You have to aim pretty damn high and well above the target for it to travel beyond the backstop... And if there are places with people within 5 miles of the backstop they shouldn't allow .50 bmg to be fired there... That round does NOT mess around.

It doesn't say he was at a rifle range. From the article: "The man told police he had been target shooting about five miles away near a rifle range "
He was near a rifle range. Doesn't say what he was shooting at.

And in regards to "doing the right thing", I was referring to the guy turning himself in for doing it... Most people would call that "the right thing".
I just looked at the ballistics of the round, turns out its absolute range is 5 mikes!

Yeah, thats true. I guess we just assumed since firing .50bmg isn't exactly legal in most areas due to its ballistics.

Something strange about this story. Definitely needs more details.
