I've been out of the computer scene for a while, and my graphics card took a dump last night.

I'm poor from buying christmas presents, so I need to know what a good value (decent quality, decent price, not top of the line) video card I should get. If anyone has one used on the cheap that might work too!

I had a Nvidia GT9800.

 

how much are u willing to spend? Dunno if this is too high a price, but the Nvidia GTX460 is about $200 and the GTX470 is about $240-250.

 

The GT9800 is an old school model. I doubt he needs anything as powerful as a 470 (which is on the mid-higher end for gamers).

ATI's Radeon 5770 is sub 150. Most common for the budget gamer. Or may I suggest the newer around 200 dollar 6850

 

Oh, another question... what resolution and do you game?

 

get two of the cheap GTX cards and SLI them. They beat the 460 and about the same price

Depends on what you're looking at between cards. Cayman 69xx series ATi cards rape in CF, but that's top end. Resolution does play a big part in what you want to see. The higher the resolution, the stronger card you want to get (If you're looking at gamer enthusiast settings)

toms hardware is legit

 

ATI drivers are the #1 reason why I will never use their product again.

 

Not 100% of all the ATI hate =P, they actually match up better with AMD for budget systems.
