Question Help Me Choose a New non-SUV Family Car

So I'm fairly sold on a 2011 Outback but I thought I'd pick everyone's brain a bit before making any decisions. Here's the scoop. '04 Forester XT was totaled back in August and we've been getting by with other cars in the immediate family since then. I think it's finally time to pull the trigger on a new vehicle and I'm frustratingly stumped.

My ideal car would be a Legacy GT wagon as the new Outback/Legacy is finally large enough to be a real family vehicle. Unfortunately, SOA has determined that we're all a bunch of pussies and only deserve to drive tall, horribly plasticly clad Outbacks. This is something I can get over, but I'd feel like there may be a vehicle that I'm not considering. If you've read this far, here are our requirements for a new, or lightly used, vehicle:

-Able to fit four 6 footers
-At or under $35K
-NOT AN SUV (ie, nothing taller/higher off the ground than an Outback)
-AWD

Can anyone else come up with a vehicle other than an Outback because I haven't been able to? TIA!

-Brian

A couple more to look at are Audi A3 wagon and Saab 9-3 wagon. Those are both getting towards your limit. I have always been a fan of Audis and I can only suspect that the A3's should be nice, though I have never been in one of them.

I'm in the same boat that you are and my searches keep coming back to the Outback.

Is reliability important? How about a 2008-09 outback?

Not big enough for four six footers and it's not AWD. I'd love a TDI, but none of them are big enough (that aren't SUVs)

We got an 05 Volvo XC-70 for Sonya and we're loving it all around. Great pickup, very comfortable, and actually handles pretty well for the type of car.

Yes, reliability is important. The '05-'09 Outback isn't big enough for four six footers for any serious amount of time. This means that car seats etc. are going to be a PITA.

This is exactly the sort of advice I've been looking for Ed. Volvo seems to be one of the only other manufacturers that fits my requirements. How large are the back seats. Could you sit behind yourself for an extended period of time?

Are you looking at an xt outback? From what I read, those volvo's require premium gas. Which if you are looking at an outback xt the point is moot. But that's usually one of my requirements in new cars. Power output compared to octane of gas.

How is the reliability? The last Volvo I owned was very good.

Good point. Unfortunately, the 2010-2011 Outbacks were no longer offered with a turbocharged engine. The higher horsepower Outback, the 3.6R, has a 3.6L flat six that only requires 87 octane and makes 256 hp and 247 lb/ft. of torque. While I like the engine setup of the Outback, the thing is just too tall and too plasticy on the outside. If I could find Euro Outback suspension take-offs I might be completely sold (it sits about an inch lower than the USDM Outback).

I wish I could've detected just a smidge of sarcasm there as both of those cars are WAAAAY too small. If sarcasm was intended, you might've wanted to use a
