I didn't put the heat shields on because I forgot. When I finally got the downpipe attached to the turbo, doing it alone and on the ground sucks, I realized that I forgot the bracket to attach the heat shield too. But in general you should have it on to keep the heat from the turbo from soaking your intercooler. That's one reason anyway, I'm sure people have other reasons.

Most tuners use heat wrap or "header wrap" to shield the exhaust system from heatsoaking the intercooler, so don't unse the factory shields, but definately wrap the exhaust system for less heat soak

I can't think of a single advantage to not having them. The reason they get left off is because people don't want to take the time to turn a couple screws.

Dude what are you talking about? Those things must weigh at least a pound!! That's like three ten thousandths at the drags!!

What it boils down to is this: Heat is not good for any part of the car near the turbo or exhaust. In fact, heat is bad for nearly every part near the turbo or exhaust. Any person in their right mind would want to prevent heat from escaping from the turbo and exhaust not only because it's bad for everything around it, but also because ideally one would want no heat to escape from the exhaust gas. So basically, leaving off heat shielding it only due to laziness and nearly always will lead to a poorer performing automobile. Oh, and if it seems like I've been in a bad mood lately, it's because I am. Have a nice day.

15 bolts= greater insulation of the intake tract and combustion cycle from exhaust heat= greater power and greater knock resistance.

to heatsinking your engine bay

I took them off because I don't have a TMIC to worry about, plus, they are ugly, plus my turbo and DP are so big that I would have to do a bunch of cutting. I wouldn't mind a nice polished one around the turbine, but that is it.

You're running the 1820 right? What UP and DP are you running? All it would require is a day at a machine shop with some sheet metal and a TIG welder to fabricate a simple shield. But then again I don't have that problem cuz I'm running that gnarly TD04L setup.
