I am new to guns as well, I am in the process of building a LMT AR15. I spent about $400 on my lower and $1400 on my MRP gas piston 16" upper, I am going to buy a Nikon M223 scope and I have 45 degree offset iron sights. All together I am going to put about $2800 into it with all accessories and upgrades. LMT is on back order for about 20 weeks for a completed rifle, I would suggest stag, s&w, and colt. I-Club is a great place to get a lot of information from members.

So I am starting to look into build my gun collection. Instead of starting a noob thread on Calguns I thought I would ask questions on a community board I am more well known on.
I am part of Calguns have read a ton about what to do and what not to do, but now I am trying to decide whether to build my first AR or buy the pre-built ones a lot of companies are offering now.
Now I look at building an AR as like fixing up a suby, many different parts of companies, lots of quality and lots of junk out there.
So in my research, I have come up with the following:
Either purchase a pre-built one CA legal from Colt LE6940CA
Colt California Compliant Rifles
Or build one, which I have never done before and admitting a little hesitant.
But I would want, Spike's Tactical Lower with Magpul stock, LMT Upper, Surefire M900v, and other various tidbits. Any other suggestions would be wonderful TIA.
So am I on the right track here or am I completely noob and lost at this? Thanks again
Other guns on my list:
Glock 19, just so I can put rounds through it, and I think it is a great beginner gun for when I bring others to the range with me.
Springfield XD .40 subcompact
Springfield 1911 or Kimber not sure which model
Ruger 10/22 with hogue stock, match/fluted barrel

I think I will get a pre-built AR. And get the hang of it. I was very scared to build my own without prior knowledge. So this will help me decide later on what I want.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
from my understanding of whats going on with SB249... is that it's been re-written to only outlaw kits like the magnet thing that people pop onto the bullet button... the bullet button will still be g2g. but i could be wrong.

There are a lot of Colt fanboys out there, Im not one of them and im not going to ty and tell you why you should open your options to other guns, but here are some things to think about.
Whats the purpose of the rifle? Hunting? Plinking? Safe queen? Tacti-cool? Or is this going to be your go-to SHTF reliable as hell rifle?
Are you going to be shooting factory, boxed ammo? Or will you be making your own handloaded ammo?
Resale value? A gun you peice together with a random upper/lower/parts kit will NEVER repay you with anywhere near what you put into it. A complete Colt ect. However will.
Some more infor and insight on why you want this rifle will help a lot for solid info.
P.S... Buy a complete Daniel Defense M4 and be done with it! You will NOT find a better rifle, with the out of the box features that these rifles have at the pricepoint they are. Period. Oh, and a lifetime warrantee againt EVERYTHING on the rifle dosent hurt either :P

Things you will want on the rifle: most of all, a Cold Hammer Forged barrel. 1:7 twist, or 1:8.

I like the option of building your own AR so you can change out the upper for plinking and have a spare upper for the SHTF plan.

Not saying Colt is the end all be all for AR15's, but they are the original and you can rest assured knowing that your rifle was built correctly.
As for the CHF barrel, I wouldn't say it's the most important feature, but it's a plus. However if your barrel is made from the correct steel (MIL-B-11595E) I seriously doubt you will ever have to worry about shooting the barrel out. Unless you constantly do full auto mag dumps, which I seriously doubt.
If in doubt, FLAT OUT

Colt holds the TDP for the M4/M16 FOW and provides these weapons to the military. To leave Colt out of your "top tier" AR15 companies is questionable.
