Longest shot made in Iraq is with the .308; ~1100m chest hit on a moving target.

i read a US army account. they got a dude with a 50 cal, with IIRC, over 1500 meters. it took like 3-5 shots to get the sniper.

I'm going to go a different route since people are recommending a lot of the stuff I would have recommended if I were on a budget.

How about a frigging Springfield Arms M1A !?!? If I had to choose a rifle in your situation it'd be an M1A for sure.

and my personal fav:

All M1As are .308 semi automatic rifles, you can get one in a 16" barrel up all the way to 26" if I remember correctly. The are tons of stock options you can do. If you want to hit targets at over 1000 meters, then the M1A is your tool... It will hit targets much further out...

I still can't believe that one of the greatest rifles on earth was hardly mentioned in this thread! Not to say that the rifles you posted aren't good, but the M1A blows them all away, and the greatest thing is that M1As are made for every situation, from the SOCOMII to the full size classic.

Not only is it semi automatic, they make 30 round magazines for it... 30 rounds of .308 would be DEVASTATING.

For those of you saying that 7.62x51 (.308) can't hit a target at over 1000 meters, you're trippin!

.308 is a NASTY round... nasty nast nasty round, We know from the ballistics testing... We never could find a 500 yard range, but we did find 600, and with some nice glass (optics) we were able to hit that target one after another, so its easy to imagine that 1000 would be quite easy,

because the OP mentioned sporting purposes...

hitting a target at 1000 yards is one thing. scoring an X ring hit... heck, even getting in the black is another.

especially hitting the target with a cold barrel... and on the first or second shot.

Brucee baby!
I love the M1A platform...I have a few of 'em...but the .308 is for novices.
Either 7mm Rem Magnum and 300 Winnie Mag flat out hand the .308 it's ***.

Yes, they can be accurate, but for a beginner, my experience shows that a bolt action heavy barreled Model 700 is the way to go to learn the basics of long range marksmanship.

The price of admission is almost half that of an accurized M1A, which means more money is available for ammo, reloading equipment, etc.
