gun crew: good rifle for 1000m competition

I want to get into shooting 600m and up and I want to know what a good starting rifle would be. Im thinking something 308... I dont want to spend a fortune, otherwise I would get the mannlicher scout.

Thoughts?

Your standard Remington 700 or Savage 10FP would be good places to start. You'll obviously need good optics (scope, rings, base, etc.), probably a new stock, action work, etc. You may also want to look into handloading, because if you're going for accuracy at 600+yds, factory match ammo will get pricey in a hurry.

1000 yards or F MATCHES...

you will need something more than a 308.

look at 338 magnum lapua. but you know what... you will be spending a fortune.

any reason why 1000 meters?

Remington 700 Police in 7mm Remington Magnum.
Flat, fast, and accurate.

Secret Service Counter Sniper teams use(d) this round and it was the sniper round of choice for some time.

Here's a 5 shot group @100m. 140 grain Ballistic Tip pushed by 69.2 grains of Rotumbo powder:

My friend just sold his 338 Lapua...I cried.
Very accurate, but very expensive weapon to own & feed.

They are legal in kalif... As long as they ain't shoulder fired rifles. Our smart law makers wrote that AB 50 which banned "fiddy's" made it so specific

Dummies...

So if you want a tripod mounted 50BMG, paddle fired M2, go for it!!!!

Granted you can afford the $8000 starting price...

Btw, a 50DTC rifles are still legal in kalif... Again thank you lawmakers...

i forgot to asked. Is this for tactical needs or for "sporting" needs?

2 diff ways to get to that magic number. But both are costly.

Go to that match several times and watch, help in the pit a couple times, talk shop.

I built a JP Custom 300WM for that match up at Sacramento but the math was just too much to tackle for me with the small amount of time I had to practice. I believe they've changed up those matches to be more tactical and challenging in the last year or so. A really custom 308 could just barely make it out to 1000 consistently, but it'd be one looong barrel. Go out to that match and see what those guys are shooting. When I tried it there was a big range of calibers out there.

Here's my 308, its one of my favorites, but its not for really long range shooting.

22" barrel + brake
Badger Ord Removable DM, bottom metal
Badger Ord Base & Rings
Leupold Mk IV (6.5x-20X) from Premiere Reticle
Jewell Trigger
Manner's Stock
Duracoat digi pattern
