I want to shoot long distances for sport... There is a gun range Ive been reading about in the east bay that has some 600yd and 1000yd ranges and I want to be able to shoot on both.

Ive been thinking about getting into shooting and 25yd handgun ranges arent doing it for me.

I built a JP Custom 300WM for that match up at Sacramento but the math was just too much to tackle for me with the small amount of time I had to practice. I believe they've changed up those matches to be more tactical and challenging in the last year or so. A really custom 308 could just barely make it out to 1000 consistently, but it'd be one looong barrel. Go out to that match and see what those guys are shooting. When I tried it there was a big range of calibers out there.

Here's my 308, its one of my favorites, but its not for really long range shooting.

22" barrel + brake
Badger Ord Removable DM, bottom metal
Badger Ord Base & Rings
Leupold Mk IV (6.5x-20X) from Premiere Reticle
Jewell Trigger
Manner's Stock
Duracoat digi pattern
Damn dude, thats pretty...

Ill head out there and check it out. Thanks for the advice.

Lemme rephrase... AB50 banned all sales of .50BMG chambered rifles in kalifornia to us mere mortals.

Other calibers like the .50DTC are not banned. Also .50BMG ammo if it's incindiery or tracers are banned or can't be sold to us mere mortals.

Ball ammo is still readily available.

When you say you built this rifle do you mean actually building the main rifle from bare materials or did you piece parts together? Looks really really good. How's it perform?

OK....going from 25yrd pistol to 1000m rifle is quite a goal.
Start off easy; 100m, then 200m, etc.

I have a Remington 700 in .308, Choate stock, and a Leupold scope I'm thinking about selling. I've put less than 50 rounds down the barrel.
This would be a very good "starting point" weapon.

Also, I may be putting my Springfield M1A with a Kreiger stainless steel barrel up for sale.

I bought a barreled action and did the rest of the assembly.

Yeah, my plan was to kind of jump in at 100/200m then 600m then 1000m. I just didnt want to have to buy a different gun every time I wanted to move up.

Very interested...

you're going to have to...

unless you go high end to begin with...

for a starter rifle, i'd go with either 223 or 308. learn how to shoot that. learn how to read the wind. learn how other factors can affect your shots.

then, when you have at least 200 rounds down that pipe, would you wanna jump into the 500+ range.

Yeah, thats why I was thinking 308 from the get go. I was reading that some 308s can be good up to 1000m. Maybe no?

^Skill is the most important factor in hitting targets at 1000m. Not just the equipment. Shooting at those distances requires much more discipline than you can imagine. Everything down to your breathing comes into play.

Yeah, thatswhy I want to do it. That plus teh math involved and the ballistics... Its more than just point and shoot.
