Be careful with these things. Using them when not acting as emegency personnel qualifies in most states as 'tampering with a traffic signal', which is usually a misdemeanor.

Don't wanna get written up for that (not to mention that most lights don't use them).

To an extent. Some traffic signals have receivers that correspond to tranmistters on emergency vehicles. They usually work via a PCM strobelight or IR laser activation.

The kicker is different counties/cities use different brands/models, so your changer wont always work for you.

So, yes they can work, depending on the model and your location and whether the signal is equipped with a receiver.

so let's say two cars are coming towards an intersection... one traveling north-south and the other east-west...both have signal changers. What happens. Like the cartoons where they both turn green and everyone crashes?

Sport Compact Car did a report on those things a few months back...they said it only worked on 1-2 lights or something during the whole test period.

The first one to get seen by the system wins. It triggers a special mode in which all other lights go through a slightly shortened yellow-> red sequence while the emergency vehicle approaches. Once the vehicle is gone, the system resets, and the other direction could be activated.

But, like 04blkwrx and SCC said, the VAST majority of lights are not equipped for this - they only install such systems near emergency centers or on major thouroughfares where emergency vehicles might get stuck.

permanently install it in your fender well and hardwire the power in to the battery. No red lights evAr (except for the fact that it doesn't really work on all lights).
