Yeah, I swore off Huffys and stuff like that as a kid when I started taking an interest in mechanical stuff. Specialized since age 15 when I finally saved enough for my first Rockhopper. I found a cheap [good quality name brand bike] on CL tho that I might snap up to thrash on till I am sure I don't need that $$$. We'll see...

keep trolling craigslist for a while. and when you need to get the bike fitted to your body, go to roaringmousecycles.com they do a great job. also they sell medium to high-end mountain bikes. lots of titanium bikes there, beautiful.
