Interesting opinions. It seems that most people are concerned about "light load" or "birdshot" for the lady, as if she's too weak to manage the gun.
The two things I'd like to bring up:
1. When you're in a situation that you're actually using the gun for the purpose which the OP says he's buying it, you've got adrenalin running through you, which would potentially make you (temporarily) stronger.
2. A meth-addict who's invading your home would probably simply take a load of birdshot to the center mass, and keep on coming. Home defense is about using the most effective stopping power you can to eliminate the threat. I've got buckshot ammo for our shotgun, and recoil or not, it's going to put most people down in a single shot.

I highly doubt she would be using it recreationally. She might shoot it once to learn to use it and that's it unless in an emergency. I'll probably use it for fun though. I decided to get the 12gauge and the recoil adjustable stock.

yeah I have the 500, its a great gun but I do wish I would have spent the extra 50-75 bucks and got the 870, its also nice that you can change the length of the mag tube on the 870 to match the barrel, I got the 18" 500 that cheats you on a round by only having the 15" mag tube that you cant extend, I never knew why they did that
i have a 500,870 and 1100. the fit/finish of the remmy is nicer but my mossberg is a work horse. im actually putting my 500 up for sale to finish paying off my newest 12ga purchase(starts with a K and ends with a G

Picking up my gun tomorrow.
Any advice on what ammo I should stock up on?
I've read that 2-3/4" 00 buck is good or a #4 buck shot is a good choice.
What do you guys use as far as home defense goes? and what is a good load for fun shooting?

for fun? depends what you're having fun with. home defense, there are different schools of thought. more or less, pretty much everything is lethal at the rang you'll be shooting in a defense scenario. i have some number 4 shells. but my fear is one of them pellets getting away from me and going into another house. sport loads/bird shot, people say that if the person is waring a heavy jacket you won't have good penetration. fine line of too little, enough, and too much. ::shrugs::

They didn't have #4 at the shop I went to.
So I bought 30 shells of remington 00 2-3/4" buck and a 100pack of winchester "general-purpose" target load to go out and play/learn with. The buck shot is for human shredding.

Yea, something tells me for home defense and in a serious emergency the last thing you'd be thinking about is what type of ammo. You'd want your gun in your hand loaded asap if someone is going to hurt you, and you'd want to make sure the first shot if not the 2nd will stop them in their tracks.
