Going to buy a shotgun today. Gun guru's, advice?

I finally saved enough money to go buy myself a decent shotgun (I hope). I'm looking to get one for home protection. I don't really have any good gun shops here, but we have a big5. I'm wondering what is a decent shotgun that isn't too expensive? Just needs to be reliable. I'm looking for this one to be able to handle by a female so I was thinking this one would be a 20gauge and then i'd buy myself another 12 gauge down the road. Like I said the gun will be primarily for home protection with the occasional fun shooting to make sure it works and to remind myself of my 2nd amendment rights.

I know they have mossberg and remington 6-7shot guns big5 for around $300.

Input and advice?

Thanks!

Remington 870, around $300ish, and feels so much better than the mossberg 500. I have both shotguns.

For my 870, I modded it a bit. I have a knox/blackhawk recoil reducing stock... (has a spring buffer system that reduces the felt recoil). B-Squared top rail with a red dot as well as a fiber optic front sight.

PS: The 20 gauge idea is not a good one. Stick with 12g and get the Knoxx recoil reducing stock, which isn't illegal because it's a pump action shotgun. (Has a M-4 type stock that is collapsible)

Both shotguns are SUPER reliable and wont give you problems. The 870 is just much better all around in terms of quality. My mossy, as reliable as it is, feels really cheap compared to the 870.

Thanks, Daniel. I personally want just a 12 gauge but I'm just trying to keep the female user in mind. I'm definitely fine with getting the 12 with the knox stock. How big of a recoil reduction does the stock give, roughly? and just curious, but why is a 20gauge a bad idea?

And I held the remington, definitely felt good. I didn't get to hold the mossberg though. I liked the remington and had a very good sound to the mechanism and felt solid.

12g ammo is more abundant as 12g is the industry standard... More stopping power for HD, and the recoil reduction from 20 to 12 isn't that significant. The Knoxx stock claims it can reduce 90% of recoil... I don't buy that but it makes shots a lot more comfortable. I've had at least a half dozen women shoot my 870 and they were all fine with it. My wife shoots my 870 with the new stock (comes with pistol grip so you can hold it easier), but didn't like shooting it without.

When your lady shoots just load it with birdshot.

I bought a Mossberg 500 12 gauge and added a tactical stock because my wife didn't like the feel with traditional stock(her arms are too short). We love it and it's perfect for home defense.

Alright, cool. Thanks for the input. I was hoping that you'd chime in.
I'll go check out a remmy 12gauge...and start the paperwork. I'll just get a variety of ammo. and get the knox stock ordered to.
Is the install difficult?

Super easy to install. It also comes with the pump action cover which matches the butt stock.

870 or 500. They are both fine. Both are well proven solid designs.
There are several shorter stocks out there.
Buy a 12 gauge.... you can always get light load ammo

True, but it's an hour+ drive for me. X2 and it's not worth it. I'd rather pick one up local...which isn't too expensive either.

I know that place. I'll give em a call and see if they have that stock I want.
