Seriously, unless there was some life or death situation going on there off camera that could only be resolved by him climbing up a frozen waterfall, we have to assume he was doing this as his hobby.
Meaning he has spent countless hours practicing this and tons of money on gear, rigging, travel, just to climb the sheer side of places he could have more easily gotten to walking the other way around.
But it all paid off that time he dropped 50 feet to his death, or maybe just 2 broken legs.
