when you're at a gas station, how do you know if you're really pumping premium gas into your car?

I worked at a gas station many years ago and we never received one question or complaint about grade switching - I don't think it ever happened during the time I worked there. The driver fills out a bunch of paperwork concerning the fuel order before he leaves (number of gallons for each grade dispensed).
I'm referring to how things work at a major oil company gas station (Shell, Chevron, Union 76, etc.). I don't know how they do things at those little convenience store gas stations.

the best thing to do is go to a trusted gas station.
On a different forum, a guy that transports gas says there is no differance on some companies because they use the same lines so they mix. The thing you should look for is clean lines. If the pump pumps it out fast and smooth, it's cleaner than the slow and clunky pumps.

I know I got shafted once.
I bought 91 at one of the three 76 stations I normally gas up at. I couldn't run anywhere near full boost without major ping-age. After going through half the tank, I filled up again, and things were MUCH better within 2 miles of filling up.
I later found out all the other 76 stations in the area were out of 91 octane. Hmm...
I didn't file a compaint with the station.
This was the 76 station on Milpitas blvd just south of Dixon Landing road.

The raising prices doesnt have to do with Iraq. Its O.P.E.C. being stupid again. Everytime they think the oil might be subject to terrorist attacks they raise the price so they make out with profits and not worry about a lose.
